said. It wasn’t really a question and Claire seemed to lose herself in thinking about what Karla had said. Gazing forward into a distance, she carefully manicured the asparagus. Karla was just sizing up the disparity between the story Claire told with her words and the story she told with her entire manner. ‘It’s worth one more shot!’ she thought. Karla scaled back the probing as best her compulsiveness could tolerate. She knew she was on hollowed ground. This called for the highest diplomacy. “I don’t think that I’ve ever seen you like this.” “Yeah,” Claire said softly. “He’s special.” Karla was unaccustomed to hear, even from Claire, such a combination of calm repose and potentially life altering news. She just couldn’t get her emotional arms around it. Everything about Claire today was extraordinary; her manner, an elegant poise, the serenity with which she set about to work, all this, plus she just met somebody. In her mind, up until now, Karla had nearly resigned herself to the idea that her sister was determined to be a spinster. She had practically become un-meetable. Karla was instantly in focus. In a moment she surveyed the kitchen and assessed every significant detail, including the loose shoelace on Larry’s sneaker. A simple slip in the kitchen at the wrong time could be a disaster. This shoelace thing was an almost daily problem with him. For Karla this problem had its root in a character flaw. He was just as sloppy and indifferent in food preparation. Keeping an eye on him and his work was a full-time preoccupation. “Shoelace,” was all she called out. It was enough, and even that little bit put a sour look on Larry’s face. But there were too many other pressing things to be thinking about. In less than fifteen minutes the first orders would start pouring in. The quality and crispness that Karla brought to the Lunch Menu had caused Donovan’s to become increasingly popular in the business community. She had transformed it during the day into a businessman’s lunch spot. This was far more profitable than the simple student hangout it had been when she had arrived there. Karla took great satisfaction in this feat since she was working out of sight in the kitchen. It was actually her work and not her ass that made it happen. *** As the pace ...
