of the kitchen started to slow down, Karla had a hard time to choose what she should be concerned with now: this new development with Claire and her mystery man, or this dull pain that had started to oppress her lately. She was never vexed by pain particularly. She pushed her way past many a barbed wire that she had run into, as she pressed through the fence lines in her life. She was usually more focused on where she wanted to get, than on the bumps encountered along the way. But this was a different kind of pain. It was systemic and originating from somewhere deep inside. She wanted to talk to Claire about it, but now was just not the time. ‘I’m not going to distract Claire today with my little soap opera.’ At the same time she didn’t know how to engage Claire on this new Mr. X . ‘She obviously doesn’t want to talk about him, she didn’t even tell me his name! Maybe that’s all there is to it, and I’m making it into more than it is.’ When she saw Claire return from the locker room wearing her scrubs she really started to wonder. ‘Is she trying to set some record for how to effectively turn off a guy on the first date? "Really…, I know,” In a moment she perked right up and said, “Bad planning, or should I say, no planning, but it won’t matter. I can’t tell you how I know that, but it just won’t.” Karla just stared at her in wonder. With Claire she never knew what to expect. Why should this be any different? “We’ll know a lot more by tomorrow,” Claire told her. “I’ll introduce you next time.” “Sure,” Karla responded and then jokingly said, “Relax and have a good time. He doesn’t look like an axe murderer to me!” For reasons that Karla had a hard time to understand, Claire seemed to take great comfort in her remark. With earnest emotion she reached forward and kissed her goodbye. Affection from Claire was one of the most highly valued things in her life. It was more genuine and real than any of exchanges she had elsewhere. She often thought that her love for Claire might actually impede her ability to form a normal relationship with anybody else. But at the same time she wasn’t at all jealous that Claire was really smitten with this guy. In fact she rejoiced in it. “Thanks,” she said. “I’ll let you know how it goes.” ‘She is without a doubt the sweetest person on the planet!’ Karla had treasured the Claire ...
