“I’m at the Library, feeling quite lost, but ‘Chin up!’ I told myself. If you aren’t lost, then you can’t be found. ;-)” Karla couldn’t imagine how to respond to an SMS like that – especially from Claire! ‘If she’s lost,’ she thought apprehensively, ‘what does that make me?’ Words that Martin had spoken to her just three days ago emerged from some place deep inside her. For an entire week she had been embedded in Dante’s Inferno, an unusual work that he had given her. On Tuesday evening, when she and Claire had visited him, he had elaborated on the beginning of this epic poem . She had never seen herself as a person likely to have her nose stuck in classical literature that was 500 hundred years old, but this work had an extraordinarily strong impact on her, and she couldn’t get her nose unstuck. It reminded her of the way she felt when she and Claire would stay up all night reading a book under the sheets with a flashlight. It transported her to a vivid, mysterious world. “As long as he wandered in circles,” Martin said, “he really didn’t need guidance. But when he desperately wanted to get out of the woods, Dante knew that he needed direction. He called out from his loneliness and desperation. Ask yourself what is the origin of your discontent. Is it not really the expression of the need for something more?” Claire had only introduced Martin to her a few months ago, but he seemed to know her better than anyone - even better than Claire. “When someone seriously tries to sort things out from the experience of their life – there are results. What is at the heart of what turns the globe today is bound up with seeking out the solutions to problems like Dante was confronting.” “Remember it was Beatrice, out of her love for Dante, that sent Virgil his way to guide him. Sometimes the most essential is not always the most obvious. Once you recognize it, however, it is inescapable.” ‘Yes it’s now very plain,’ she thought to herself as he continued. “Yes, love does make the world go ’round. But for most, they haven’t even realized that they are lost in the woods. Then, this mysterious thing called love only seems to make it spin.” Martin had a touch of humor that had a way of softening even the most bitter realities and make them palatable. On the other hand he would say that, “We regularly have to bite the bullet and suffer the pain of the truth. But every time we do so, we get a little stronger, are able to bear what we really are and stride further. Truth is something that we must learn to bear. But beware, ...
