As a matter of survival he had acquired a knack for neutralizing problems, and in this case, heading it off before it ever got to be one. He looked knowingly towards Karla. She was such an easy read, and he wanted to verify that she understood that his action sprang from her disapproval of Alice. She had never said a word about her, but really didn’t have to. She was the reigning princess of this place and Maurice was quite happy to keep it that way. For him the numbers told the story. Business steadily improved under her influence, and the last thing he wanted was strife. The peace that settled in over Karla gave him his confirmation. As Maurice turned to leave the kitchen, Karla reached with her fingertips to massage the back of her neck.
