earth am I thinking!?' She headed straight for the walk-in cooler. With the door snapping firmly shut behind her, she began pacing back and forth. She would often come here to have little talks with herself in the refrigerated air. The subject was all too familiar. She had a tendency be too judgmental and she knew it. These compulsive ideas would explode in her with such power it was disabling - sometimes out of nowhere. She recently acquired the ability to recognize them on impact for what they were. As a result, these bouts in the frigo were always followed immediately with strong self-admonition. She couldn’t live with herself for a minute bearing an attitude that ran contrary to what she knew was right. ‘I’ll be very happy when I finally outgrow that shit!’ she finally thought, trying to put a smile back on her face. While Karla was in the cooler working on her disposition, Maurice appeared in the kitchen and asked, “Where’s Karla?” “She’s in the walk-in, putting her hormones on ice.” Larry wouldn’t miss an opportunity to take a jab at her behind her back. He was jealous and resentful of her. She was younger, had less experience, and had been brought in over top of him. In his mind it was very simple. Karla never flaunted her beauty. She never really had to. All she had to do was walk into a room and every eye was on her. Her deep chestnut brown hair, which glowed with red by the end of the summer, crowned her angular face with its sharp clear blue eyes. She was not only gorgeous, but she was keen smart. Her self-confidence was inspirational to those who liked her and extremely annoying to those who didn’t. She wasn’t at all concerned that she had rough edges to her personality. She was unpretentious, vital and visceral; always bringing zest to the environment. In the workspace her energy was contagious, and this had transformed the kitchen that had slumped into a depression under the controlling grip of Larry’s oppressive methodology. He interpreted her non-stop wrestling with life as some sort of hormonal dysfunction. Her therapeutic trips to the walk-in were, in his mind, only proof that he was right. As she emerged from the cooler Maurice’s face lit up. “I just wanted to tell everyone,” started Maurice in his usual calm and non-theatric manner, “that Alice won’t be joining us at Donovan’s. We’ll just keep looking until we find someone who’s right for us here.” He had been managing restaurants for some time and was well aware of the hot tempers that tended to thrive in that environment. ...
