dancing all the time, even on Sundays, and in the short times we did get together, the conversation didn’t flow so easily anymore. We never talked about how we felt, but more about other things, like books and music and our foolhardy dreams of the restaurant which always managed to fill awkward pauses. Something had changed. I didn’t know whether it was in me or in her. She still made my heart race and yet, the warmth had gone, the easy laughter and smiles were forced and prolonged. I wanted to talk about it, but I struggled for an appropriate time to bring it up. There was always something going on that would stop me; and then, one night, when I finally got the courage to open my mouth, she got there first. “Finn, I don’t think this is working anymore.” We were in my bedroom, and I could hear the wind howling outside. I turned to look at her, my heart beginning to thump hard. “What?” “I just… I don’t think this is love,” she said, awkwardly. “I mean, I like you, but we don’t love each other.” I gazed at her, speechless for a couple of seconds. I’d been hoping for an opportunity to open up, not to break up. “How… how can you say that? You don’t know how I feel.” She sighed heavily, and sat down on the bed. “Yes, I do. Finn, you don’t love me, you can’t. There’s this distance between us, and don’t say it’s not there because it is. I feel like we try, you probably try more than I do, but it’s not working. I mean, you’re a billion times more suited to me than Daniel ever was ...
but I just… it’s still not enough.” “Well, how much more do you want?” I asked. “Not everybody finds their soul mate. I’d say we’re close enough. Neither of us are going to find anyone more suitable, are we?” She didn’t say anything, just gazed at me almost pityingly. “Are we?” I repeated and all of a sudden it struck me. She already had found someone she preferred. Vincent, that moodily magnetic guy, that goddamn bastard. “The AD?” I asked, unable to say his name, and she didn’t even look at me. I’d never counted on this. I always thought that by finding out about her interests and hobbies I could manipulate myself into her heart, but that was exactly where I was wrong. I couldn’t control her feelings. She was fucking in love with Vincent, probably had been long before I’d even heard of her and there was nothing I could do about it. I couldn’t do a damn thing. “So this is it?” I asked. “This is all over? Just like that?” “It’s not over,” she said, touching my arm placatingly. “You’re amazing Finn. I still want you in my life. I just don’t think we should be… so involved.” “No!” I said, desperately. “You’re wrong about this!” She shook her head, tears of pity welling up in her eyes. “Please, Finn…” “Please what?! I’m not going to let you walk away from me! What about the restaurant?” I played my last card, knowing it was weak, a fantasy, and yet pinning all my hopes on it. She tried for a small smile. “The restaurant’s not my thing. It’s yours. You know that. It’s your future, ...
