every single goddamn time. But that night, at that fundraiser, even though she looked better than ever, I didn’t fall into her gaze. She was beautiful, yes, and she was probably the kindest person I’d ever met, but she didn’t have that crazy, heart-stopping effect on me anymore. “I’m happy,” I said, and I genuinely was. “The restaurant is amazing. I should thank you for that.” She frowned. “It was all you.” “No. I never would have even considered it. You gave me the idea.” “What’s an idea if no one takes it up?” she said, smiling. “Take the credit, Finn.” “Okay, fine. I’m amazing. You should come by sometimes. Our lemon drizzle cake? It’s a bloody masterpiece.” She laughed. “Maybe I will.” And then she frowned. “No, I definitely will. And I’ll sue you for the recipe. Do you do entertainment? My brother’s in town doing gigs in a couple of weeks.” “That’d be brilliant.” I said. “Great. Well, I’ll call you.” She smiled, and then got dragged away by an admirer. I watched her for a while, the way she talked, the way she laughed and she was still beautiful. It felt good to know that she was happy, and I was glad I hadn’t got in her way anymore. She did call me, and I almost didn’t pick up because I didn’t recognise the number. It had gone from my mind, and the realisation that my infatuation was well and truly over was a relief. She’d moved on with her life, and I’d moved on with mine. I wasn’t unfulfilled. I had so much going on in my life that I didn’t tangle myself up in wishful thoughts and dreams anymore. She was a beautiful memory, and I was happy for the both of us. We kept in touch for a couple more years, but it didn’t seem important anymore. Our lives were going in different directions, and I was perfectly happy with mine. The END (of Finn’s obsession)
