Now the head and neck. He pushed its front legs apart and then made one long blow from its chest to crotch and then another next to that one. He cleaned the wool off the front leg on the side of the sheep that was now clipped and then half rolled it and shore the other side in the same way. The fleece although not long, it was only six months worth of growth, fell away in one piece as it rolled off the animal. As he did the last long blow down the spine all that connected it to its owner was the piece it was sitting on. Now Drew rolled the bemused animal onto its side and sort of held it down with his knee while the last few cuts were made down its back legs and across its rump. Drew pulled the cord to silence the shears. He stood up and as he did so the lamb got to its feet. Drew pushed it between his own legs and the bedraggled looking animal went through a hole in the wall next to the swinging doors and slid down a ramp into a pen outside the sheds "That's one," he said with a smile. Tess was more than impressed. It had only taken him a few minutes. And now he was back dragging another one out and positioning it between his legs. Another three or four minutes and it was also in its short coat. She did notice that this one did have a couple of red streaks on it where the cutters had nicked its skin. "Will it be okay?" she asked as it was pushed down the ramp to join its cousin in the outside pen. "Just a couple of nicks, nothing to worry about. Some of them have looser skin ...
than others, it bunches up under the comb of the hand piece," Drew explained, "It doesn't hurt them too much, just like when I cut myself shaving." Drew picked up the two fleeces and threw them into a large bag that was hanging on a frame opposite where he had been working. "Short wool like this is not worth a lot, it's not really fine wool either as these sheep are bred for their meat and not the fleece. Still it is better not to waste it. The meat works don't give us anything extra if they have wool on the skins," he explained to Tess. Tess liked the way Drew had said 'us' in his explanation. "Your turn, catch a sheep. Show them you are the boss and just grab one," he encouraged her as she looked a bit hesitant. Tess pushed through the doors, the sheep huddled together at the rear of the pen. She stepped towards them and grabbed at the first one that tried to move past her on the right. "Right hold it by the wool and reach down and pull one of its front legs out from under her. Roll her onto her back," Drew instructed as he watched over the top of the doors. "Well done. Now grab both front legs, lift a little and drag it out here," he continued. Tess struggled backward through the doors and tried to remember what she had seen Drew do a few minutes ago. She managed to get it into a silly looking sitting position and lock a leg under her arm. "Very well done," Drew said proudly, "Just next time make sure you get her somewhere near the hand piece. I'll give you a hand to move ...
