    "Okay, time for you to learn to wrestle sheep," Drew said as he jumped off the quad bike and shut the gate of the pen behind the shearing shed. They had been down to one of the far paddocks and separated maybe thirty five sheep from them main flock. After walking them back to the pens at the rear of the shearing shed they now had to cut twenty of last year's lambs from the breeding ewes. "Right you herd them down the race and I'll work the gate to sort them out," said Drew. "Be careful the dog doesn't run into you, he gets pretty excited while he works." Tess watched as Drew went to the end of the narrow race that had a gate at the other end. She could see that he would select the lambs as they came along and they would be shepherded left to the shed, the ewes to the right and the freedom of the open paddock. With out any prompting the dog started to run from one side of the pen to the other forcing the sheep into the corner and eventually into the race. Drew started to sort them. Tess waved her arms and yelled. She didn't know if she was having any effect on the sheep, she suspected the dog was doing most of the work. Tess was amazed to see the dog jump up and run across the backs of the sheep when one old ewe decided to turn back when half way down the narrow chute. The kelpie saw the problem and jumped over the railing and barked and lunged at it, but he did not attempt to bite the belligerent animal. Eventually she turned and ran the correct way.     back in to the pen and continued to harass the remaining sheep into the corner. Drew had counted twenty lambs, then he rechecked his count. He released all the unsorted animals into the paddock. "We'll put these into the shed and then let them settle for half an hour before we give them a haircut," he said as he opened a hatch on the rear of the shed. They now had to move the sheep up another race that ramped up into the shed itself. The dog again proved his worth and it was only minutes before Drew replaced the cover over the hatch and the sheep were locked away safely. "Come on let's have a coffee," said Drew as he started the quad bike and they rode it the short distance back to the machinery shed. "An instant coffee will do me," said Tess aware that Drew would not have the patience for a pot to brew in the middle of the day when there was work to be done. She was both excited and apprehensive at the thought of shearing sheep. Drew had shown her a shearer's hand piece and explained how it worked. It was an intimidating sight as the cutting teeth were long and sharp. She sat on a chair on the rear veranda in the shade while Drew made the brew. Yesterday Dave and she had spent the morning with Dr. Morton interviewing three candidates for the receptionist position at the clinic in town. Tess herself would be working Monday, Wednesday and Friday with Dave. The successful candidate would be working Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday there would be two receptionists ...
