across so you can reach it." He reached down and dragged the sheep two feet towards where the shaft and starting cord for the shears dropped down and then waited for Tess to get back in her stooped position over the lamb. "Okay pick up the hand piece. Remember you don't have to push into the lamb, you push along the skin smoothly. Don't worry if you miss bits around the head and face, they are the tricky bits and it will come to you with practice," he said by way of his final instructions to her. Tess pulled the cord and the shears started their noise and cutting action. She held the lambs nose with her free hand and tentatively ran the comb of the shears across the top of its head. It looked funny after its top knot fell to the floor. 'At least it isn't bleeding yet,' she thought. Carefully she touched up around its ears and then its face. 'Good Tess, now under her chin and down along its tummy," Drew encouraged her. Tess did as he instructed. It required a bit of strength to push the cutters through the thick wool and to hold the animal at the same time but she managed the first full blow. "Now again, right along next to that cut all the way down again. And keep going as far as you can around that side while the ewe is cooperating," Drew said. He watched as the wool fell away from the sheep. It was not what he would have called a nice even clip, but it was not bad for a novice shearer. "Roll it over a little and do the same on the other side now Tess. Go right around ...
until you meet up with the other side you just clipped," Drew explained,"That's it, put your knee on her just under where her ribs finish." Tess was feeling more confident now and could feel how hard she had to push the hand piece. She had also lost her fear of the sheep. The second side seemed to be going quicker than the first and it was easier on her back as she was now half kneeling and not in the bent over position that eventually ends all shearers' careers. Without any more instruction from Drew she did its legs and rump before finishing off around its bottom. There were a few streaks of blood beginning to appear on the white wool. Tess was concerned at the first one but could tell by the lack of reaction from the sheep that it was not too distressing for it. "When you let it stand up make sure its head is facing the escape hatch. I don't want to have to chase it around in here," advised Drew, "Keep straddling it as it gets up and a big push on its rump." Tess let the poor animal up and pushed on its backside. She watched looking between her legs as it slid down the ramp and hit the dirt in the bright sunshine outside. She pulled the cord and the hand piece stopped its chatter. "How did I do?" she asked expectantly. "Very well for a first time," said Drew as he kissed her cheek. That was something he had never done to one of his shearers before. "Before you do the next one follow me, " he said as he picked up the fleece and threw it into the bag with the previous two. She ...
