explained that she had worked for Lou and June for over twenty years and couldn't see herself working for anyone else. She joked that she was too old to train another doctor in her methods. Retirement was the better option or her. At the end of the afternoon Tess felt as if she knew a few people now. She didn't feel so much of an outsider. People would still wonder about her and Dave as they drove through town but now some of the locals would know who they were. It was a successful day for both of them. After a quick stop at the post office to post the Viagra and a prescription to Drew's parents they had shopped for groceries and then had driven home. "Well come on, we can't put it off any longer," said Tess as she finished her coffee. Drew laughed and held her hand as they walked back to the shearing shed. "I'll do a couple of them to show you how to hold them down and the first basic blows with the shears. They aren't big sheep and they shouldn't be too hard to handle. The main thing is don't be scared of them, they won't bite. They will kick you yes, but biting is not one of their defense strategies." Drew told her with a smile. He connected the hand piece to a shaft that dropped down from the rafters of the old shed. That shaft in turn connected via some exposed gears to a spinning shaft that ran the length of the shed. That spinning shaft was turned by a large electric motor on one end and had a clutch mechanism in front of every stand, as the places where the shearers ...
worked were called. When the shearer was ready to start work on an animal he pulled on a cord that engaged the clutch and the spinning action was transferred down the drop shaft and its universal joints to make the teeth in the hand piece cross each other rapidly and cleanly separate the wool from the skin of the animal. Drew let Tess hold the hand piece, told her to hold it tightly and turned it on. Once he had judged she had enough strength to hold it and she became familiar with how it vibrated he turned it off. "Here we go then," he said and stepped through the spring loaded door into the pen holding the sheep behind his stand. Before Tess knew it he was backing out of the doors again dragging a lamb. He was holding it upright by its front legs, the animals back against his front. It's rear legs dragged along the wooden floor boards. Drew propped it on its rump and then deftly lay it back so that it was now reclining tummy up on his legs. He put one of its front legs under his own arm pit as he bent down. "The lamb is now secure," he explained. "It can kick and struggle if it gets frightened but as long as you keep it upright and its feet off the floor it can't escape." "Your hands are free to use the shears and the quicker you work the better for you and the sheep," he instructed. Tess stood back and wondered if she would be able to manage this. Drew pulled the cord and the shears hummed into life. She watched as he deftly clipped the wool from around the ears and cheeks. ...
