She laughed flatly. “I don’t care. Sometimes, I just want to let it all go.” I touched her arm gently. “Do you want me to walk you home?” She shook her head. “I have to ask you something.” “Sure. Go ahead.” “What do you want from me?” she asked. “Do you want to be like a couple? Or just friends?” My mouth went dry and I struggled for a response. “I… I don’t know. What do you want?” She sighed, looking frustrated. “I just want to know how you feel. It’s not a hard question, Finn. This friendship thing we’ve got going, I feel like it’s a prelude. I want to know where we’re going.” “I don’t understand you,” I said. “You barely broke up with Daniel. Are you looking for a rebound or something? Because I don’t want to be that guy. I’d rather just be your friend.” She shook her head. “There’s nothing to rebound from. Daniel and I hadn’t been close for a long time. I’ve kind of been chasing after an ideal and I know it’s never going to materialise so right now, I’m looking at reality. And I see a lot of possible things and the most likely thing is you. And that’s why I’m asking you, are you serious about this? I know it’s unexpected and kind of weird to demand an answer but I don’t want to waste time on a dream anymore. I want something real.” Her eyes met mine and neither of us backed down, neither of us looked away. “I’m serious,” I said quietly. “If it’s commitment you’re looking for then yes. I’m serious about this. I’m serious about you.” She kept her eyes on mine, like she was ...
trying to see through me but I held her gaze defiantly. “Well then, I’m serious too,” she said quietly and finally I saw the ghost of her beautiful smile. “Should we shake hands or something?” I asked, poker-faced. “’Cause that kind of felt like a business deal.” She bit her lip. “I think you should kiss me.” So I did. I kissed her right there in front of all the windows. It felt good to feel her mouth against mine. It wasn’t what I’d remembered. I’d thought about it too many times in my head, made it different but standing there, with the sun shining down and her arms around me, I remembered it and relived it and after months of uncertain drifting, I was finally home. She pulled away for air. Up close I could see that she’d been crying but she hid it well and I didn’t want to ruin the moment by asking. “I don’t have to come back here all summer,” she said, after a pause. “Is that a good thing?” I asked uncertainly. She thought it over, looking at the huge glass and stone structure and then she said, “Yes. I think I need a break. I need to figure out what normal is. This place… these people… they give me these dreams and then snatch them away. And I’m tired of it. I just want to be normal again. I like dancing but I don’t like the people or the politics. I just want a summer. Ice-creams in the rain. A tan. Breathing space.” She looked up at me tentatively. “What do you think?” “I think I can provide that,” I said deadpan. “Though not all at the same time.” *** We were sitting ...
