I ran the knife rapidly through the potato, cutting it into perfect, thin slices. Alessandra watched, impressed. “I can’t use chopping boards,” she said wistfully. “I only ever cut vegetables against my thumb. You know, holding them.” “Doesn’t that hurt?” I frowned. “Sometimes. But I don’t cook that often.” “Huh.I guess you don’t have time.” She shrugged. “Right.” I arranged the potatoes in a layer on top of the fried onions and poured over the eggs, seasoning it with salt and pepper. I washed my hands. Suddenly, I felt stupid for being so negative. I’d achieved a lot. My plans had come together. I was standing in her kitchen, cooking us dinner. We’d had sex. We were like a regular, dysfunctional couple. So far, everything was a success. So why did I feel like a failure? “How’d you learn to cook?” Alessandra asked. “Experimenting,” I said truthfully. “I’d make something and if it was nice, I’d remember it and make it again.” “I’m only good at desserts,” she smiled. “Rubbish at anything else. Except stir-fry’s.” “Huh.” I leaned against the counter top and looked across the room, out of the window. I could see the dark, spindly shape of the fire exit, and the glittering lights of the city beyond. “Is this awkward?” I asked suddenly. “Because if it is, tell me. And I’ll go.
