joint but in a few decades it’d probably be bulldozed. Things never lasted. I stood there and stared up at the building. It looked imposing, scary. I read the sign over and over until I knew it off by heart. The rain didn’t let up. I thought of myself earlier that day, running to that goddamn restaurant like a fool and I wanted to laugh. How desperate was I? Why the hell should I care about her when there was no space in her life for a guy like me? The answer hit me like a bullet . I had nothing else . And even though it hurt for all my plans to be dismantled, I suddenly found myself relishing the pain. I’d never felt such strong emotions before and in some twisted way they spurred me on. Life was a game. And it didn’t come with instructions. I had nothing else to live for. I couldn’t give up on her now. Maybe I’d have to wait it out a little longer but surely I could get there in the end. I started walking home, a refreshed mess, determined to win. *** The next morning I headed to work, the same as usual. “I’m sorry,” the voice was behind me and I recognised it even before she’d finished the first word. I finished polishing the mirror and turned. “About what?” Alessandra fiddled anxiously with the hem of her sweatshirt. There was a large gym bag slung over her shoulder. “Last night.” Her eyes met mine. “By the way… dinner was delicious.” I raised an eyebrow. “Is that a compliment or a peace offering?” She shrugged and smiled hopefully. “Both?” I shook my head. “What do ...

He was fooling… everyone. Me, Vincent, the clinic.” I frowned. “What? How?” She sighed. “When he would provide a urine sample, there’d be a guy known as a collector who was supposed to observe, and make sure he wasn’t tampering with the urine. But Daniel was paying the guy to turn a blind eye. He showed up with a vial of someone’s clean urine, emptied it into the test container and turned it in.” I stared at her, speechless. For the past month, I’d spent all my free time trying to figure out how Daniel was managing to pass his drugs tests. I’d seen it all, read the blogs, the articles, the confessions people had made online. I’d read about Whizzinator’s, masking agents, adulterants, diuretics, Perma Cleanse, catheters, protease powders, even goddamn gene doping. And all for nothing. “Where’d he get the clean sample?” I asked hollowly. Alessandra shrugged. “Who knows? I guess his roommate. You know, I can’t believe I didn’t realise.” I was in shock too, but for a different reason. I should have figured it out. Money. Money made the goddamn world go around. It made sense too. It made a lot of sense. Daniel wasn’t poor. He had the kind of money to bribe someone. And I guessed it would work both ways. Once he’d convinced the collector to turn a blind eye once, he could ...
