could trust the cabbie or not. As soon as they were inside, she might be jumped by a whole group of men and… No, best not let her imagination go there. On the other hand, she was sitting here with a cab driver with a pixelated head. That in itself was madness. So maybe there was something in that figurine business. “Shall we go?” the cabbie said. “You won’t regret it.” Tess wasn’t so sure. In the end she followed the cabbie into the building for no better reason than that the alternative seemed to be to sit alone in a taxi in a scary car-park. The door opened straight into a store room full of cardboard boxes, some with Asian lettering, and racks of clothes. About fifteen yards in on the left, there was a makeshift office, with a man sitting there. He smiled when he saw them. He was dressed smartly in a suit and tie. “This must be Tess,” he said, addressing the cabbie rather than her, and not bothering to get up. “Tess, meet Basher,” the cabbie said to her. Basher? Tess thought. This was going from really bad to worse. What kind of man was called Basher? Only one kind as far as she was concerned. “Don’t worry,” the cabbie said. “Basher’s a pussy cat really.” Basher smirked. Rifling through papers on his desk, he eventually found the one he was looking for. “Tess!” he said, finally addressing her. “Since you’ve kissed the figurine and recited the incantation, we already have your consent, in a manner of speaking.” Tess’ stomach lurched. Shit, this really was for real, somehow, ...
in some warped parallel universe. But she hadn’t really consented to anything; she hadn’t believed it was for real. Basher continued. “But since you’ve dithered so, we want to make doubly sure. In addition to which, you were pretty drunk when you did it, which makes the whole consent thing a bit iffy. We need you to sign this consent form.” He waved the piece of paper in his hand. Consent form? That was both worrying and a bit of a relief. If they’d gone to the trouble to produce a consent form, they must be on the level in one respect. She took the piece of paper and read the concise text, feeling faint as she did so. “What’s this?” she breathed. “What will happen to me if I sign this?” Basher smirked. “She’s not very bright, is she?” he said to the cabbie. That stung. Tess may not be very assertive or adventurous, but she was as sharp as a needle and she knew it. Her intelligence was the one thing she had to be proud of. “Sex!” Basher cried out, looking at her. “Sex, and lots of it!” Tess took a step back. She hadn’t had real, physical sex in ages, but this was all too much. Sex here, under these circumstances, still not knowing what the men had in store for her. “Look, Love,” the cabbie said. “You don’t sign, I take you home. But it would be a shame, seeing how so much time and effort has gone into arranging this.” What was that to her? “I didn’t ask you to,” Tess said. “Well you did, Doll,” Basher told her. “In a manner of speaking.” Then, to the cabbie, “She really is a ...
