bit dense, isn’t she? Thick and not very self-aware. A lethal combination.” That hurt, as harshly as she could, Tess said. “Well I’m not so stupid as to sign something when I don’t know what’s on the end of it.” Basher grinned, a calculating look in his eye. “We’ve done our research,” he said. “We always knew you’d be a bit of a handful.” “A handful?” “So much repression, so much going on beneath the surface. So many hidden depths.” “Hidden depths?” Tess said. “I don’t think so.” Basher shrugged. “What, you think the kinkiest your desires get is wanting to fuck your friend’s teenage son? Or possibly being made to fuck in the back of a taxi?” “There are no hidden depths,” Tess said, suddenly more assertive than she ever was. “She really is a piece of work, this one, isn’t she?” Basher said to the cabbie. The cabbie, in turn, turned to Tess, the pixels glinting as he spoke. “Basher’s right,” he said to her. “We do our research and we do it well. There’s a fair bit under the surface that you don’t know about, Tess.” His calm voice contrasted with Basher’s, who sounded impatient when he said, “Look, Doll. This is all very simple. You sign the piece of paper, you obey any command that’s given you as long as you’re in this building. You answer to the name of Obedia. what your Guardian’s here for.” “My Guardian?” Tess said, turning to the cabbie again. “Yes,” Basher said. “He’ll be telepathically tuned into you, to make things stop if they really do get unbearable.” “Unbearable?” “We’ve done our research,” Basher repeated. “And it’s obvious to us that you’re the kind of woman who would use the safeword far too lightly. Don’t worry, your Guardian will keep you safe.” There was a long pause, broken only when the cabbie said, “You can trust me, Tess.” Tess wasn’t sure at all. She was feeling terrified, but there was something about the fear that was exciting too. Normally Tess always erred on the side of caution. “Oh, what’s the point,” Basher said, reaching out his hand. “Call it a day, eh?” “No, wait!” Tess said. Her mind was screaming at her not to sign, but what swung it was a sudden determination to prove to these men, and more so to herself, that she had no hidden depths at all, at least not the kind the men were suggesting she had. She could sense Basher’s look of silent satisfaction as she signed. As soon as the pen left the paper, she felt as if she’d just signed her life away, but the deed was done now. “Good!” Basher said. “Now, take your clothes off!” “What?” Tess exclaimed. “Obedia, Obedia,” Basher said. “This isn’t going to go well if you can’t obey a simple command.” Tess just stood there. She didn’t know what to do. Well, obviously she would have to take her clothes off, she just hadn’t thought about it properly, how it would ...
