She was looking right at him with a big, contagious smile. Before he knew it, George was smiling from ear to ear. The silence was broken, and the two began to talk as they rode across the prairie. Just before night fall, they reached a small stream. George suggested that they break for the night. Both riders dismounted their horses and began setting up camp. George excused himself to gather firewood as Ekta gathered stones to make a fire ring. She was exhausted and nodded off several times while waiting for George to return. She was tired, but she was not ready to end her day, not before knowing more about her white guide. Ekta decided that the cool water from the stream was what she needed to help rejuvenate her. She walked to the water's edge. She dipped her foot into the water, and it felt good. She looked around, to see if George was near. When she didn't see him, she reached behind her neck and unbuttoned the button on her dress. With very little effort, the dress was at her feet, and she was wading out into the water. George had leaned down to gather a bunch of sticks on the ground. Giving into his desire would bring disgrace to himself in the eyes of his people, but worse, it would bring shame and disgrace to Ekta. He lowered his arm load of wood and picked up a stone, and threw it as far as he could. The thud that the stone made, was heard by Ekta. After hearing the thud, Ekta quickly waded to the grassy bank of the stream. She gathered her dress and hid behind a tree until she had covered herself. The white man brought out feelings that no man had ever done before. Yet she knew her destiny and knew she could never break the bond made by her father and the father of Taza. Too much depended on their union. She emerged from behind the tree just in time to see George coming toward camp. He was coming in a different direction from where the sound had come, so she was convinced he had not seen her. George bundled the wood and began to build the fire, as Ekta pulled food out of her pouch. The two ate in silence. As the fire came to life and began to crackle, so did their conversation. “Are you excited about tomorrow?” George asked as he bit off a piece of jerky. Ekta bowed her head, “To tell the truth, I am not. I am grateful to be part of the plan to join our people, but I am very nervous ...
