Which is easier said than done, when you’re on crutches. The sound of my crutches obviously confirms my father’s suspicions that spies were afoot. I hear booming laughs from my father and Ben. My mother and I scramble into two separate chairs at the kitchen table and try to appear nonchalant as dad and Ben walk into the kitchen. “Oh, there you two are! Did you guys have a nice talk,” my mother asks. “Like you didn’t hear it all, 006 and 007,” my father says motioning towards my mother and me. He then walks around the coffee table, leans down and kisses my mother on the cheek. He then looks at me and says, “Didn’t I teach my son any manners? Offer Ben a seat.” I get up and pull out the chair, next to my own, for Ben. He smiles, nods at my smiling father and takes a seat. My father stands back up and announces, “The men in this house are hungry, my lady. Is that lasagna about done?” My mother shoots up out of her chair and goes to the oven to pull out the lasagna. Under the table, I nudge Ben’s knee with my own. He reaches over, under the table, with his left hand and places it in my right.
