It was an unseasonable storm. It had built out over the ocean and blown in across San Francisco. It came suddenly, not on little cat's feet, but on a roaring, chrome Harley. It swept up from the Sunset district, over Golden Gate Park and crashed into the hills bordering the bay. In early November, the temperatures were still hot, and after a long, dry summer the torrential rain was welcome. It was refreshing and cleansing. The wind had died early in the afternoon, and the evening was composed of soft, rain-filtered light, and the pleasant sounds of the now-tamed storm. The sweaty, summer-sated city luxuriated in the cool, revitalizing rainfall. The Parson family house was situated on the back of Nob Hill. It was a small but well appointed, three bedroom, Victorian building. It had been lovingly maintained and it provided a comfortable, pleasant home for the family. The Parsons had inherited it from their parents. Over one hundred years ago, the original owners had sat huddled in the basement during the great earthquake and fire of 1906. The subsequent owners had all carefully cared for the house. It was an edifice to traditional San Francisco gingerbread exteriors, and natural, walnut, post and paneling interiors. The living room was the nicest room in the house, and most family activities took place there. A large, wall-sized, window had been built into the bay side of the room.
