***** As hard as Ray and I tried, we just couldn’t come up with that sum of money. I got a call from Roy that following Friday. Ray was at work and I was home alone. “Times up,” he said. “You got the money?” I lied and said, “Yes.” I was desperate. I didn’t know what else to say. I didn’t want him breaking my husband’s legs, and I didn’t want him breaking mine. I had to stall him somehow. “Be down here in an hour,” he said to me and hung up. On my way to the bar I had gotten so nervous, scared and panicked I had to stop at a gas station and run into the restroom and throw up. Oh, I was sick to my stomach. I sank to the floor, stretched my legs out and put my arm across my forehead, and I stayed there until I felt myself beginning to calm down enough to drive. When I walked into the bar, the bartender motioned me to go right back. I tapped on the door and the same scary thug answered it and let me in. It was the three of them, the same as before. Roy was sitting back in his big leather office chair, puffing on a cigar as he watched me walk in. “Let’s see the money, toots,” he said, sounding like an old-time gangster. I didn’t say anything as I slowly stepped to his desk. I stood there frozen, unable to talk, unable to move. He looked at me and saw that I had on a nice dress and high heels shoes. “Hey, you here for a date? Open the fucking purse,” he growled. “I can’t,” I whimpered. “What do you mean, you can’t?
