My name is Beverly and I am writing this story to tell about the time I had to literally save my husband’s ass. I was 23 years old, fresh out of college and searching for a job that matched my criteria at the time I married Ray. We only dated for two months before we ran off to Vegas together and got married in a hurry. I couldn’t say no when he asked me. He was handsome, tall, sexy, romantic, and he simply swept me off my feet. My parents didn’t even know that I was dating him until I finally took Ray to my family’s home and introduced him as my husband. My parents, being good actors, welcomed Ray and we had a very nice dinner. But the fireworks started after we finished dinner and mom and dad pulled me into another room and closed the door. “What the hell were you thinking?” my dad spouted. He looked furious. “How could you run off and get married without telling us anything about it?” My mother broke right in, “I’m so disappointed in you Beverly. We raised you better than this.” And then she broke down crying, “I was always planning a wedding for you, a right and proper wedding, but you just decided to do it your own way.” My mother stopped crying and gave me a stern look. “You always did things your own way. That’s always been a problem with you. You never listened. Only God knows what other kind of trouble you got yourself into since you went off to college.” I listened to my parents ranting and raving for nearly twenty minutes before I told them I was leaving. I ...

I grabbed Ray by the hand and stormed out of the house. ***** I thought I knew everything about Ray during our first few months of marriage, but then I discovered that he had a gambling habit. He liked betting on horse racing and he was terrible at it. It all came to light when he came home one night later than usual and looking white as a ghost. “What’s wrong honey?” I asked concernedly. “I’m in trouble, Bev. Big trouble,” he said. “Talk to me honey,” I urged him on. Ray poured us both a tall scotch and asked me to sit with him at the kitchen table. He told me his story about borrowing five thousand dollars from a loan shark and gambled it all on a number 7 horse to win. 7 came in last, and now he was up against the wall to pay back the money or getting his legs broke. I felt terrified by this news. I didn’t know what to say or do. I was also feeling angry with Ray because he had never told me about his gambling habit. We had separate bank accounts and I never really looked at his. It was easy to imagine that he was broke. My bank account wasn’t all that hot either. I had been spending more than I should. ***** About a week later, this loan shark that my husband was indebted to called our house for the first time. I had just gotten out of the shower and being at home alone I rushed for the phone to answer the call, “Hello? “Your husband there?” a gruff male voice on the other end asked. “No, he’s at work. Can I ask who is calling?” I asked politely. ...
