didn’t really want to know, Michel would lie awake contemplating what Lucy was doing. Names of friends had been dropped during their conversations. Some were male, and he wondered who these people were, what they meant to her, and about the details she was leaving out. Blackness reigned and, when he thought of her, the skies were no longer blue. Instead they were befouled with jealously, and scorched by ire and loneliness. Michael sensed she no longer needed him, not like she had, and the pain cut like a razor. All the while he pined for her but, when the invitation to visit finally arrived, his mind was a jumble of conflicting emotions. He had wanted to leave that very second so that come the dawn, she could be in his arms. But he was frightened, terrified, that his fears would be confirmed. -------------------- The campus was submerged beneath a layer of snow. An hour from reaching Lucy, an unseasonable flurry had dropped from the skies and chilled Michael to the bone. But when he pulled to a stop she was there, waiting in the parking lot. Lucy was radiant, had filled out a little, and had curves in all the right places. She had certainly spread her wings and taken flight and, as he took in Lucy’s majesty, Michael knew there was little chance of him ever soaring with her. However, it didn’t change the way he felt. She wasn’t the same person but still Michael wanted and needed her. He reached out and took her hands in his. He looked into her eyes, and he knew. Everything he’d dreaded, the reason for the invite; in that one look, all his fears were confirmed. Lucy pulled him to her and held him close. Michael felt tears on his cheek and, though her words were whispered they echoed like thunder. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I’ll never stop loving you.” Michael pulled back. Once again their eyes met and, when they did, their tears flowed freely. Michael’s were of loss and of longing and, though he didn’t want it to be true, he could see that Lucy’s were of dissolution and freedom. As his sobs caused his body to shudder, Michael lowered his gaze. Lucy reached out and touched his face. “I’ll never stop loving you,” she repeated. So tenderly she kissed him. Her lips ...
