Michael was in her arms, between her legs, and buried deep inside her fissure. Their faces were so close that their breath was one, and their bodies slid together on a sheen of sweat. Lucy’s breasts were pushed against his chest, and her hands were on his back as he pitched into her, causing her to whisper his name. But even with all that, Michael could feel her slipping away. It wasn’t the same. He’d been hoping that just seeing one another would be enough, that the spark that had always arced between them would ignite the flames once more. But, despite the fact that the embers were glowing, it was all too apparent that they had for too long been starved of fuel. So, as Michael’s muscles tightened and the pressure built within, as Lucy squirmed beneath him and begged for release, he feared the kind of release she truly wanted. -------------------- They had been so close for so many years that an impregnable fort had built up around them. The morning of teenage fervour gave way to the impending evening of adulthood, and darkness loomed on the horizon. Michael had smiled and shared Lucy’s excitement as she readied herself for college, but as the date of her leaving bore down, the pain grew. They told each other they would always be together, that distance didn’t matter, that they would travel when they could and share every moment. He knew it was a lie. Oh, he wanted it to be true. He wanted that fort of theirs to stand strong against the siege of inevitability, but Michael saw cracks forming even before she left. He didn’t want things to change, but Lucy wanted nothing more than to spread her wings. And now almost a year had gone by, and the baying hordes of severance had stormed their walls and were pillaging their citadel. So quickly came the drift. Lucy was busy with classes and friends. Phone calls and Internet rendezvous became shorter. Their frequency dropped and Michael felt her absence. Then a tingle would appear in his eyes, and tears would sting until sleep provided refuge. But, all too often, sleep wouldn’t come. Though he ...
