splitting it equally between four bags. Harry felt restless. He glanced at Isabella. She was looking out of the window, calm as a still lake. He reached forward and switched on the radio. A Duke Ellington song rolled out and he tried to relax. “How much have we got?” he asked, glancing over his shoulder. The scene in the backseat was one of beauty. His three comrades were busy bundling up the notes and sorting them back into the zip-up bags. There was so much money that it was all any of them could smell. The song changed and changed again. Harry idly flicked between radio stations, still checking the rearview mirror every so often. The road behind them was clear. The rustle of cash from the backseat was comforting. “Around thirty, I think,” Lucas eventually said, not looking up. “Seven, seven and a half each?” Bella looked over her shoulder, clearly surprised by the figures being thrown around. Her eyes widened when she saw the cash. “What are you gonna do with it all?” Her awestruck voice made Harry smile. Carlo laughed. “Whisky. Cigars. Whores. Hell, I could buy myself a whole house of ‘em.” “Buy a place to lie low, first,” Lucas muttered. “And don’t spend stupidly.” “Stupidly?” Carlo laughed. “Harry’s the stupid one.” Harry’s grip on the wheel tightened but he smiled all the same. The music from the radio faded and the well-spoken newsreader began doling out headlines. “Turn it up!” Sean said, suddenly excited. “Do you think we’ve made it?” “It’s not even been an hour,” Harry muttered, but all the same he increased the volume. The headlines droned on. Unemployment rates. Hoovervilles. Wage cuts. Germany. Roosevelt clashing. War between Paraguay and Bolivia. The IND Eighth Avenue subway line. All five of them were listening. And then, breaking news. “ This just in. The Carter Perry Bank in New York was earlier targeted by a gang of bank robbers. Full details of the robbery are not yet known but unconfirmed reports claim that hostages were taken during the attack. More information to come. Thank you for listeni- ” “I told you!” Sean crowed as Carlo whooped and hollered. “News travels fast!” “Too fast,” Harry said tightly. “We ought to start splitting up. Four guys rob a bank, take a woman and here we are, four guys with a woman.” “You’re right,” Lucas said. “Stop the car. The three of us will get out and split up.” He pushed one tightly packed canvas bag at Isabella. “That’s yours, Harry. A quarter, give or take a couple hundred.” “Give, I hope,” Harry said dryly. “Right. Go. Now.” He pulled the car to the side of the road and the three men hurried out and separated instantaneously. Isabella ...
