looked giddy or intimidated (no doubt a result of being raised by the mighty Cyprian) but also never looked cold or menacing. She was incredibly engaging and mysterious, forcing men and women alike to be pulled into her orbit. She seemed impressed by no one, and bowed to nobody; nobody but Cyprian. As Rome crumbled around them, the great senator charged Rona with more and more responsibility. At the tender age of fifteen, Cyprian had used her as his personal interpreter in negotiations with delegates from Palestine. At seventeen, Cyprian sent her as his emissary to Gaul to assess the extent of Roman military losses. No one, not even the most experienced generals, questioned her authority. It was not merely because she was Senator Cyprian’s representative, but because she carried herself with a conviction and assuredness that impressed even the most seasoned and battle-tested legionnaires. She couldn’t understand why, but for a few years now, she would dream of Cyprian and his strong, resolute eyes hovering above her. She would wake up to find her bed and her tunic soaking wet. Her womanhood was flooded and throbbing and she always knew that Cyprian was the cause; she longed for him to recognize her above all others. Now he had. “I will always be loyal to you, sir. I owe you everything. You only need to tell me what is to be done, and I’ll do it.” Cyprian set down his work and turned to face Rona. Her head was down facing the floor, and Cyprian cupped her chin in one of his strong, calloused hands. “Rona, you look down for no man except for me. Ever. You will be second only to me. In all things, you are in ...
