The guys were sitting around the table, playing poker when the bell rang. “Truck 30, Med 1, vehicle accident, possible entrapment.” The cards went flying and the legs of the chairs scrubbed the tiled floors, as the guys rushed to their trucks. They stepped into their boots and pulled up their bunker pants, while throwing coats and helmets into the seats. In a matter of seconds, the red lights were flashing and the sirens were whaling. While going to the scene, each man gets into his zone. The steps of their job played in their minds over and over like a movie. They had done this hundreds, probably thousands of times, but in their line of work, there was no room for mistakes. One slip could mean a life and that would mean failure and to these four men, failure was not an option. Once on scene and the truck was put into place, Lieutenant Jay McDowel’s boots were the first to hit the pavement. As he assessed the scene, he barked out the orders to the other three men in his crew. As he approached the vehicle, he saw her. “Ma’am, my name is Jay. I am with the fire department, and we are going to get you out of there, just try to remain calm.” Jay stood up and relayed his initial patient assessment to the Med Unit that was in route with his hand held radio. I am not leaving you.” He reached into the window and held her small, bloody hand. “You squeeze my hand if you get scared or you start to feel pain, you are going to be fine.” The crew began their work. As quickly as they could they cut the posts of the car and lifted the roof off. Jay moved to the back seat and placed his hand around Bayli’s neck until the paramedics replaced them with a C-collar. For the first time Jay realized how pretty Bayli was. She looked up at him with her grey-blue eyes, and he saw fear and trust. He smiled down at her and winked. “We are almost done and you are doing great.” Once the collar was in place, he slipped his arms under hers and helped place her on the back board. He never left her sight as the board was placed on the stretcher and wheeled to the ambulance. Once loaded, the ambulance rushed her to the hospital and Jay went back to clear the scene. The guys worked for another couple hours and when the car was loaded safely, they climbed back into the truck and headed back to the station. On the way back to the station, Jay replayed the night’s events in his mind, and smiled. They had done everything right and even though seriously injured, the patient was going to make it. He closed his eyes and pushed his hair back. He could see her. Her eyes looking into his, her quivering ...
