I had imagined bumping into him so many times. I’d played out the conversations and different situations, pictured what it would be like to actually see him in person for the first time in sixteen years. It would then frustrate me to think that we had spent so many years at school together, in such close proximity, yet I’d never really known he’d existed, or knew that he even knew who I was. So many times throughout our lives we had been so close, skirting on the edge of each other’s lives, within touching distance, but never making proper contact. It was only through the world of social media that we had connected. That was about to change. I was wandering around the mall at a loss for which shop to try next. My task was to find an outfit for an upcoming event, but I was struggling. Why was it, when you had money and a reason to shop you could never find what you were looking for? I had been out window shopping only weeks before and had seen tons of things that I wanted. My day hadn’t been a total bust, as I’d managed to find a dress, (which I was unsure about) but I couldn’t find shoes to match anywhere. I’d already checked my usual shops, but hadn’t been able to find anything. I decided that maybe a caffeine fix would help. I wandered over to the small coffee shop. The shock and recognition must have been clear as day on my face. “Neil!” I unconsciously adjusted my hair and cursed that I hadn’t made more effort with my appearance that day. He smiled and my cheeks flushed red. He was taller than I’d expected and even more attractive than his photos on his profile. (Which I’d looked through plenty of times.) “You needed a caffeine fix as well?” I asked, trying to break the small amount of awkwardness between us. “Yeah, I’ve been looking for a birthday present for someone, but I’ve not been having much luck. How about you?” he asked, as he looked down at my bag. “I’ve got a dress sorted, although I’m not too sure about it. I need to find some shoes to go with it, but I’ve been drawing a blank.” “Maybe coffee is a good idea then. Mind if I join you?” My stomach did a little turn with a mix of excitement and nerves at the prospect of getting to spend time with him. I’d always really enjoyed chatting with him online, but had always been paranoid that I was pestering him. I worried that he only spoke to me out of politeness, yet there he was asking to spend time with me. He could have easily ordered his coffee and gone about his day. “Yeah I love that... I mean yeah, sure.” When we’d both got our drinks we went to one of the small tables at the back of the shop. As we took our seats his leg brushed mine. My breath caught a ...
