“Strange, don’t you think?” I shook my head. “I’m sorry? What’s strange?” “It’s strange that he’d leave everything so easily accessible.” “Well, the door was locked.” I shrugged. “I don’t know. I just clean.” Vincent glanced at me. I knew he wasn’t stupid and yet there was nothing outrageous in my story. Everything I’d told him was believable. “Don’t tell anyone about this,” he said, and he shut the drawer. “Nobody, okay? Not even Alessandra.” His eyes met mine; dark, knowing and vaguely threatening, and then he strode out of the room and disappeared. I stared after him, wondering what he knew. How could he know anything? It was impossible and yet the way he said it, the way he looked at me, it made me feel guilty. What could he know? Maybe he’d seen us saying hello. Maybe he saw us leave together at the NYE party. That must be it. He probably suspected something had happened between us. That was all it could be, surely. Still, it made me uneasy. I locked the door to Daniel’s dressing room, resolving to stay out of Vincent’s way as much as I could. *** The hours wore on, without further excitement. I wiped down mirrors, cleaned windows, bleached toilets, mopped floors and waited for the day to come to an end. Daniel was nowhere to be seen. I wondered what had happened, whether Vincent had confronted him. I’d done the damage; I just had to wait for the fallout. The waiting annoyed me though. I hated waiting. But I got wind of events before I expected. I was in two minds about ...
whether or not to head home that night. I was meant to help clean up after the Sleeping Beauty performance but it would be a good few hours before I was needed. If Alessandra was on stage, I’d have sat in the audience and watched. But she wasn’t. And there was nothing else to do. I ditched the overalls, changing back into my normal clothes and walked up and down the corridors, enjoying the sound of the dancers bustling to get ready. I stopped at the noticeboard and glanced at the lists. Daniel was coming down the corridor, holding onto the arm of the platinum-blonde from earlier. “Did you tell him?” his voice was sharp. “What? Who?” Ella’s voice was confused. “Vincent.” I pretended to be engrossed in the notices as they went into his dressing room. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Daniel, let go of me. I have to get ready. I’m on stage in like fifteen minutes.” I stepped cautiously down the hall and stopped short a couple of metres from the open door. “He found the coke.” Daniel snapped. “And he’s making me take another test. Like, now.” “What?! But we have a performance!” “I’m not on. And he doesn’t care. I don’t have the time to figure it out. And I need to call Ally. She’s probably waiting for me and there’s no way I can make it. This is such a fucking mess!” I heard the sound of something smashing. “Where the hell is my phone?!” “You won’t say anything about me, will you?” Ella asked tentatively. “I don’t know,” Daniel barked. “I really don’t know. I need to find ...
