and yet it wasn’t coming fast enough. Despite how recklessly he was living, he was young and there was no guarantee that one day he’d overdo it. He could have kept going for weeks, months, even years and that was too long. I had to do something. But I couldn’t do anything serious. I knew that if he ended up in hospital, it’d just turn everything around and make him the victim of whatever the hell he was subjected to. I didn’t want him to be the good guy. I wanted everyone, Alessandra especially, to see how bad he really was. Maybe then, she’d finally end things with him. I couldn’t bear for him to end up in hospital, surrounded by well-wishers. So cutting his coke with dry bleach cleaner was out of the question. Not that I had access to his supply, but still. I told myself not to even try it. The weird thing was that Vincent was onto him. He’d forced him to check into a drug rehab program run by a clinic a couple of miles away from the LBC. The idea was that if Daniel tested positive, he’d be suspended from the company. And yet his tests all came back negative. It made no sense. I knew for a fact that he was using, day in, day out. I literally saw him snorting two lines of coke in quick succession off the top of one of the water tanks in the toilets, a couple of hours before he had to check in for an appointment. But every single test came back negative. It was unbelievable. He was screwing with the results, no doubt about it. But I needed to find out how. I needed to blow ...

We’d nod and exchange pleasantries if we saw each other but apart from that, there was nothing. I needed to intensify the contact, to make something happen that would throw us together, while simultaneously pushing Daniel away. I was impatient, desperate for a chance and as every day passed I felt like things were getting more and more out of hand. I hadn’t achieved anything tangible since having slept with Alessandra. I’d just wasted time watching Daniel and confirming things I already knew. My lucky break came, quite by chance. It was a normal morning. I was taking the previous day’s announcements down off the LBC noticeboard and replacing them with new ones. The board was down the corridor from the dressing rooms and most of the company was in class. And yet, I could hear voices from Daniel’s dressing room. I cautiously walked towards it. The door was half open. “…you think I don’t want to be there?” Daniel’s voice was aggravated and annoyed. “I told you already, tonight is no good for me. I have to check in for a test and then I have a thing for Ally’s birthday. I’m taking her to that restaurant, Marionette’s at eight.” “Do you have to go?” It was a female voice I didn’t recognise. “Yes, I have to go. I need to keep her happy.” “But I need you.” He laughed, a short, humourless sound. “You don’t. You need the coke.” “Same thing. I know you have ...
