    theme-song played in my head as I ate the rest of my burger and daddy went and joined mom in the bathroom. It was just my br other and me sitting there for the first time since he showed me how to open the cabinet and left. “So…? How’d it go?” was all he asked. His disinterest had bothered me up to this point so I was relieved to hear him even make an effort. I was still pissed however so being the stubborn br other that I was I didn’t give up a lot. I merely said that it went really good then suggested he go get dressed so we could go see the neighbors when mom and dad got out of the shower. I braced myself because normally he HATED being told what to do, even small suggestions, but the distraction of having new neighbors successfully sidetracked him. “What!? New neighbors!?” he asked. “Are there any girls? Did Dad say if they were ‘in’ or not? I was wondering why there was a U-Haul at the Sifford’s place but I thought they were still moving out.” He stated obliviously. This was typical Chris, far from observant. The Siffords had moved out over a month ago. I told him about wife, husband and said that I THOUGHT there might be a girl my age to which to just blurted, “Figures.” and took off to his room, closing the door behind him. Dad came out first and plopped himself on the couch, changing the channel from the Nickelodeon show I was watching to Star Trek. Mom came out later looking very pretty and went straight to the kitchen instead of touching her now cold burger. ...
    Hearing the pots and pans clanging around in the kitchen was commonplace as mom started to throw something together for the people next door. Soon, Chris was out there too and we all sat there watching TV while a loaf of banana nut bread baked in the oven and my mom ate her cold burger. Daddy took the tin out from the cabinet under the TV and started rolling a green cigarette while we watched. I spent more time watching him than the show as he broke the buds up, licked his fingers clean and rolled it in the paper. After Mom had taken the bread out of the oven I saw him put it into an empty pack of cigarettes. He put the pack in the pocket of his shirt. Later we headed over and it had just gotten dark. The four of us walked down our driveway, onto the sidewalk and up their driveway. I had introduced myself to new neighbors before but for some reason I was kind of nervous now as Mom rang their doorbell. We waited, mother, father and sons and the husband opened the door. He smiled right away before my dad started by welcoming him and introducing us all. By the time Daddy had introduced us the wife had joined her husband at the door and he recounted all of our names to her before introducing himself as Isaiah and his wife as Elizabeth. She seemed kind of cold and warm all at once. Warm in that her appearance and grace drew you in but cold when you tried to get there. Her looks came off as judgmental in comparison to the warm greeting of her husband. She just half smiled and looked us ...
