surface of the frying pan. “So, what time do you think we’ll leave for Uncle Frank’s cabin next weekend,” I ask. The look that spreads across my father’s face has to be the definition of disappointment. “Not sure if we’ll get to go next weekend, bud,” he says. “Got a call last night from work saying they need me to go out of town, again. I’ll be leaving next Friday. Not sure when I’ll be back.” “Oh…” I say, my shoulders slouching, noticeably. I wasn’t that psyched about going fishing, and all that outdoorsy stuff; but, the opportunity to hang out with dad, and make up for lost time, was what I was really looking forward to. “Yeah… hence the small talk a moment ago. Didn’t know how to break it to ya’,” he says. “It’s cool. Maybe some other time,” I ask, face full of hope. “You know it, buddy,” he says, smiling apologetically. I smile, again, and reach over for a piece of bacon and start nibbling on it. “I know it won’t be like going to the cabin; but, if you want to ask Ben, I’ll slide you a fifty and you can take him out for dinner and a movie or something,” my father says, hopeful that it’ll somewhat heal my sting of disappointment. Money for me to just have, in case there’s something I’m wanting to buy. “Dad, no,” I say. “This is already too much!” I try sliding the twenty back over to him. He slaps my hand away and shoves it back. “No,” he says. “You take it. And take it quick, before I realize I’m out seventy bucks!” He smiles at me, returns the wallet back to his back pocket and sits down. My mother walks two plates over to the table. One with my over easy eggs and one with her scrambled eggs. She takes a seat next to my father, directly across from me. “Chow down,” she says, sprinkling pepper over her eggs. I do as I’m told as dad reaches around mom, pulls her in and plants a kiss on her cheek. Blake Abel Foster - Later That Evening I shot Ben a text message shortly after breakfast. I told him how dad gave me fifty bucks, so he and I could go on a date. He said that would be awesome and he’d be by around 5:30 to pick me up, so we could eat before the movies. I changed into some jeans, a plain light blue v-neck t-shirt and a white American Eagle hoodie. Not really wanting to ...
