    Blake Abel Foster It’s a beautiful morning in mid-November when my father and I set out for our weekend getaway to his brother’s cabin, in southern Missouri. We live in the northwest corner of Missouri, so, it’ll be about a five-hour drive. But, dad and I share the same taste in music so, it shouldn’t be that bad of trip. Plus, I have my cell phone and will be able to text Ben. Halfway through the journey, we stop off in a decent-sized town and get a bite to eat at a fast-food joint. We get it to go and eat in the truck while dad continues to drive - he wants to make good time. The drive there is filled with jokes, light-hearted chitchat and some serious talking - the serious talking being: dad apologizing - again, being sure that Ben and I are safe when we… ya’ know… and having respect for my parents and not engage in any sexual activity while all four of us - mom, dad, Ben and myself - are in the same place. That, he says, he would even tell me if I were straight and dating a girl. And I believe him and do not bat an eye when I tell him, “Of course, dad.” When we finally arrive, we turn down into the long gravel driveway that leads to the cabin. It sits on a lake that stretches as far as the eye can see. This is the Ozarks, after all. We climb out of his truck and begin unpacking the vehicle. Before the trip, I had an appointment with my doctor and he gave me an okay to take the cast off my leg and replace it with one of those black protective boots. It’s not very stylish; ...
    but, hey! It sure as hell beats walking on crutches! Suddenly, another vehicle turns onto the long gravel driveway and pulls up behind my father’s truck. Climbing out of the driver’s seat is my Uncle Frank and his son, Blaine - my cousin, who just happens to be eighteen - just like me. I guess my father failed to tell me the part where they would be joining us on our weekend getaway. Uncle Frank walks up to my father and gives him a good slap on the back - Frank is the older of the two brothers. They begin shootin’ the shit and reminiscing of days spent here during their childhood. Blaine approaches me. I hold my hand up to bring down into his low-five, like we usually greet each other. He seems hesitant, at first. “Whoa! Hold up,” he says. “I’m not gonna’ catch it, am I?” “Catch what,” I ask. “The gay ,” he says. My eyebrows furrow for a moment before he busts up laughing and slaps my hand, even taking it a step further and pulling me in for a hug. “I’m just fuckin’ with you, man,” he says. “Ass hat,” I say, laughing it up. “Man,” he begins, “when the news broke out in my house about you being gay, it was all my parents could talk about.” “Great,” I say. “This is already turning out to be a great weekend.” “Naw, man,” he says. “Not in a negative way. They were just shocked. They’ve seen all of your homecoming and prom pictures of you with some pretty damn good lookin’ girls and whatnot. They had no idea you were gay.
