    Emma and her Mom, Chap 1. I knew something was going on at the house next door when I pulled my pickup truck into my driveway and heard all the hammering. I had also seen a work truck in their driveway. As I got out of my truck I saw workers building what looked like a handicapped ramp from the porch down to the driveway. Oh, crap. I live in a very quiet cul-de-sac in the suburbs of an Alabama city and there are only three houses here. The house next door had been empty for about six months and I had seen no Realtors showing it on the weekends, which was OK by me. I did not want a family with a bunch of screaming kids moving in. On the other hand, because the house is a Ranch style, meaning all on one level, it would be perfect for a pair of retirees. So of course, I figured I had some geezer couple moving in. As I looked at the nice front lawn, which needed some maintenance, I grumbled, “And don’t even think about me cutting your damn grass.” Because I have a small riding lawn mower, I have been cutting their grass over the past four months since the Realtor never seemed to send a lawn service. Why did I do it, you may wonder? Because a neat looking house makes it look like folks are still living there and reduces crime. So what else do you want to know about me? Let me tell you how I ended up living here. In high school I was never a ‘nerd’ but got me ass kicked by the bullies during my senior year. It pissed me off enough to join the military instead of going to college. ...
    Sixteen weeks of hard training bulked me up enough so when I went back to visit my high school hardly anyone recognized me. I ended up in a Logistics Group where I reviewed invoices for payment before the officer signed them for approval and payment. By the third week I started noticing invoices which looked like duplicates or just plain forgeries. I started laying them aside and built a stack of them over a few weeks. When I showed my officer the charts I had made of the suspected invoices, he called the investigators. Long story short, I got a promotion for catching forgeries. So I inadvertently went in a new career direction. I worked in investigating fraud and after my military stint; I went to college on the GI bill and became an accountant. Now, I have a new job, which I never tell people about. My business card just reads ‘Accountant’, but I actually work for the IRS. Yea, I learned real fast to never tell anyone where I work. It’s no way to meet females. However, there are benefits in this job. The main one is I work out of my house and only have to go into the office two or three days per week. Then there are the occasional court days where the judges lock up some cheating dumb ass. Whenever that happens I think back on the bullies who beat me up and laugh. So, anyway the next day I left work a bit early and got home about mid-afternoon.
