He walked out of the bar, following him, still not quite believing he had agreed to the suggestion. Still not sure he would actually follow through. He hadn’t done this since he was in college, and then only once. And he had been at that frat party and well over served. That was a dozen years ago, and buried deep in his mind. Earlier that evening, Jason had fought yet again with Cheryl, his wife of nearly eleven years. They had been having problems ever since his company had laid off about 40 people in the last year. He was still there, but doing the work that three people had been doing before. He was working long hours, but since he was salaried, still bringing in the same amount of money. He had been approached by a recruiter about a better job, and Cheryl wanted him to take it. Jason was reluctant because it was with a start-up company and he felt it was too risky. He stormed out, got in his car and started driving. He had no idea where he was going, but after driving around awhile saw a club called Hunters Place, that looked pretty busy. He decided to check it out and pulled into the lot, parked and went in. Without really paying much attention, he sat down at the bar and ordered a beer. Even though the company was having a rough time right now, he felt it was still safer than moving. The bar had been fairly crowded when he had gone in and was filling up even more. There were only a few open seats at the bar, so when a guy sat down next to him, Jason thought nothing of it. After a few minutes, the guy started talking. “Hi. I’m Alex.” “Jason.” “Hi Jason. Don’t think I’ve ever seen you in here before.” “First time. Kinda had a fight with the wife and just took off driving. I spotted this place, and just pulled in.” “Ahhh, that explains it. Looks like you’re ready for another drink. Let me buy it for you.” Alex signaled the bartender for another round. The bartender refilled Jason’s shot glass and put another beer in front of him, then also poured a shot for Alex. They raised the shot glasses in a toast and drank them down. Alex asked him what had happened and Jason explained. “She just doesn’t get it. I don’t want to work the long hours, but if I leave, I could find myself out of a job when this new company goes belly up in two months. Then what will I do? She thinks I am a fool for ...
