    It was Veteran's Day a number of years ago when I was standing next to an attractive older man in his late 70s dressed in a long thick pea coat and wearing a poppy on his felt cap. We both observed the ceremony in silence and remembering the service of our fallen countrymen. As people started to leave all around us, he stayed still, standing tall and looking off into the distance. I could tell by the medals he wore on his lapel that he had himself been in the service. As the city square emptied, I stayed behind, curious to know more of his story. Finally, I worked up the courage to go speak to this older man and pay my respects. "Excuse me sir, I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am for your service to our country" I said. He turned to face me, eyes somewhat misty and blinking away what might have been a tear. I put out my hand to shake his and he gripped it in a firm handshake. I felt like there needed to be more to this interaction, he seemed lonely and this was an occasion to alleviate that. "Can I buy you a coffee?" I asked. He seemed surprised by the offer and smiled, "I don't care much for the coffee these shops put out, but I make a fine cup myself. Would you like to join me for one?     take him up on it. "Of course. I'm Jay" I said. "Bernie, at your service". We walked together and chatted along the way to his apartment building, which was a retirement residence. Letting me into his place, we took off our coats and shoes and he began to get the coffee ready. Our conversation was flowing along, both enjoying what the other had to say. He told me stories about his experience in the Korean War, what he did after as an engineer and into retirement. He was serious and straight forward, a strict man I could tell. I told him that I was in university taking physics and thinking of becoming an engineer myself and looking forward to going to Korea the following year on exchange and internship with Hyundai's heavy-duty industry. We sat down on his couch to enjoy our coffees together and they were much better than any shop could make by far. He told me that his wife passed away five years ago, that's when he moved into this apartment. "I miss her very much, but the thing I miss the most is the intimacy". I was a little taken aback by that statement, what exactly was he trying to tell me? Is that a hint I should pick up on and probe further?
