unpacked and hung the various ornaments, both commercial and sentimental. The first one I hung, as I usually did, was a backpack ornament that I had been given back when I was five years old. It had a teddy bear sticking out of the top, a picture of me in the middle, and the words ‘Jack’s Sixth Christmas’ written along the bottom. I smiled as I hung it prominently on the front of the tree, memories of Christmases past flooding back. Each of us had a ‘Baby’s First Christmas’ ornament but mom reserved the hanging of those for herself. Alan and I helped dad battle the giant ball of lights, yet another tradition that you’d think would have gone away after a few years, but… Tara, having no special ornament to hang, contented herself with the tinsel and innocuous orb decorations and using her height to help lift ornaments to the empty spaces higher up. The big problem, as we ran into every year, was finding a way to make everything fit. I mean, everything did fit, sort of, but it was more a question of how to parcel out the ornaments so there was an even distribution of…okay, fuck it, we just wanted to know how to show off best. Put everything we loved at the front of the tree, facing the living room, and we would see it, but the side of the tree facing the window would be mostly bare. Looking at it made my heart swell as the sharp scent of pine needles that had been clogging my nose for the past hour dissipated into a more pleasant background scent. The music continued to play so the Christmas spirit swirled around us in music, scent, and sight and I couldn’t help but stretch out my arms and wrap them around dad’s and Tara’s shoulders, pulling them in close to me. Mom saw. “Hang on!” she said, scampering out of the room. She returned a minute later with the digital camera and the tripod. “Alan, Amanda, scoot in close.” She placed the camera on the tripod and fiddled with it for a bit before sliding into place beside dad and putting her arm around his shoulder on top of mine. “Everyone, smile!” We did, trying our best to make the smiles seem genuine. Smiles never really feel right when someone tells you to do it. The camera flashed, momentarily blinding all of us. Mom checked the picture. “Perfect,” she said happily, “Now one in front of the tree.” “We need the star first,” Alan said, pointing at the bare top. I pulled the ornate star from its box and handed it to Tara. “Will you do the honors?” I asked with a grin. “Hey!” Amanda said, miffed, “It was my turn this year!” “You’re here every year,” dad replied, nodding at me, “Tara’s a ...
