“Few things. Can I use your employee discount?” I grinned. “I’d be happy to help but it’s only gonna knock off maybe five bucks.” He shrugged. “Worth a try.” “You ready to go?” “Not yet.” I frowned and zipped up my coat. “Okay, well I’m gonna head over to the Starbucks down the walk. You saw it?” “Yep.” “Cool. Well, see you in a few?” “Yep.” Man, it was hard to have a conversation with this guy. Ah, well, still cool as they come. I bunched my arms tight against my chest, sniffing the frozen snot up into my nose as I walked down the sidewalk to the Starbucks. There was the definite metallic smell of snow in the air and the clouds were the right shade of steel. Still no flakes but that suited me fine. It wouldn’t be fun to have my car skate all the way home. The warmth of the coffee shop was heavenly and a nice, steaming cup of cocoa was going to be the cherry on top. Five minutes later, I was lounging in one of the thick armchairs by the window, sipping at a frothing mug of hot chocolate and smearing the whipped cream on my upper lip. Still no sign of Carson. I could understand; when you love video games as much as we do, lack of funds doesn’t stop you looking everything over. I pulled out my phone and shot a quick text to Kayla and Tara. Me: Guess who came into the store? It took only a few seconds for Kayla to reply. Kayla: Carson? Me: How did you know? Kayla: It’s not really something you need to text me about if one of the group comes in, is it? Me: Lol nope, I guess not. ...
Kayla: ;) Me: I’m gonna hang with him for a bit. Kayla: Okay. Be home soon? Me: I’ll let you know when I’m headed home. Kayla: Okay. Love you. <3 Me: Love you too. <3 I put away my phone and looked up to see Carson standing a few feet away. “Jesus,” I said, jumping a little in my seat, “You a ninja?” He sat down lankily. “Nah. You texting your girlie?” “My girlfriend? Yeah.” He nodded approvingly. “How’s she doing?” “Good. She says hi.” Okay, I lied, but it seemed polite. “Hi back,” he said, looking around the place. We pretty much had it to ourselves, aside from the employees behind the counter. “You want something?” I asked, “Coffee? Cocoa?” “I’m good, man. So what’s up?” “Not much,” I replied, taking another sip of my drink, “Since yesterday, anyway. What’s up with you?” “Nothing at all,” he said lazily, running a hand over his scalp, “Wishing I had all the money for all the games.” I laughed. “Well, when we all win the lottery…” “Uh huh.” He blew out his cheeks. “Say, Craig isn’t scared of you, is he?” “No,” I said, trying not to laugh, “Why?” “I don’t know…He just seems more…I dunno…nervous than usual.” “Well, the ‘usual’ you’re used to is probably how he used to be, huh?” He sucked in his cheek and nodded. “Yeah…that was fucked up.” I couldn’t really read his expressions but it looked like he was angry. “Trust me, there was a time just looking at him pissed me off,” I said, “Being his friend at first…wasn’t easy.” “Yeah, how did that happen, by the way?” Carson asked, ...
