went through the garage of Kayla’s house and silently climbed the stairs to her room. Her parents still weren’t home and, by a glance at my watch, wouldn’t be for another couple of hours. Good. I preferred when it was just me and Kayla, and not just because of sexy times that could result because of it. Tori was sleeping on her bed, curled up in a tabby ball. “Scootch, Tori,” Kayla said, tickling the cat’s belly with her fingers, “We need you to move.” Tori came awake with a mewling protest, stretching her legs before reluctantly getting to her feet, her eyes looking as tired as mine probably were on a Monday morning. I held out my fist and she rubbed her head against my knuckles, purring. “So what’s up?” I asked Kayla, scratching under Tori’s chin. “You really think Carson is cool?” “Absolutely. You don’t?” “Not at all,” she replied haughtily. I scooted Tori out of the way and sat on the bed. “Why?” “Jack…you seriously didn’t notice the whole ‘I’m better than you’ attitude?” I shrugged. “Not really.” Kayla made a disbelieving sound. “You were the only person he actually treated like a human being. He didn’t give a shit about the rest of us.” “To be fair,” I replied, “I kinda did most of the talking.” “My ass!” Kayla snapped, “Craig was the only one being silent and that’s because Carson was pushing him around!” “Oh, he was not.” “Yes he was!” Kayla actually looked close to tears. “Jack, Carson is bad news.” “Why?” I asked, throwing my hands wide, “He’s just a friendly, ...

Joe’s the same way.” “Joe’s not that arrogant.” “Have you listened to Joe lately?” Kayla rubbed her face with her hands and sat on the bed. “And what about Tara wanting to go after him?” “If she wants to, then fine,” I said, my voice firmer than before. “He’s gonna treat her like crap.” “You don’t know that.” “I do. I’ve met guys like him before. They…” She set her lips and walked over to the window, hugging herself tightly. “There’s something else, isn’t there?” I asked, getting up, “Who are the text messages from?” She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye. “That doesn’t have anything to do with it?” “Are they from Nick?” I asked. “Nick from school?” “Yeah.” “No.” “Then who are they from, Kayla?” She sighed. “I’ll tell you if it becomes an issue.” “It seems like it is an issue,” I replied, “You talking about how guys like Carson act…” She sniffed and brought a knuckle up to her eye and angrily rubbed it. “It’s like how Craig used to be,” she said softly. “It is not,” I said firmly, “Craig was a rude, disgusting, self-centered piece of shit.” “And Carson isn’t self-centered?” Kayla asked pointedly. “Yeah, maybe he is, but he’s a teenage guy. That’s what we’re like.” “Not you,” she said, turning to me with wet eyes. “Trust me, sweetheart, I can be an asshole too.” “Do it,” she challenged, looking me square in the eye, “Be an asshole to me right now.” I blinked. “Ummm…what?” “Be an asshole,” she said, a tear streaking down her face, “Show me that you ...
