said. “Stone drunk,” Joe replied, gesturing with his half-eaten slice of pizza, “Two roadblocks and fucking nothing.” “That’s fucking awesome, dude.” He looked over at Belle. “Belle, right?” “Yes,” she replied primly. “What do you think of this guy? Good boyfriend?” “Of course!” She sounded offended that he needed to ask. “Why?” She blinked. “Because he’s awesome and sweet and treats me well and…well, just everything.” “Don’t forget ‘dashingly handsome’,” Joe said, striking a pose. “Can’t forget that one, Thumper,” I said in a stage whisper. Carson’s face split open in a wide grin. “What did he call you?” “Nothing,” Joe said quickly. It was an odd couple of hours, to say the least. I was certainly enjoying Carson’s company, while able to admit that he could be a bit rough and ready, but the response from everyone else seemed a bit mixed. Joe seemed to alternate between enjoyment and annoyance, Craig was cowed, Becca was protective, Belle was confused, Alan was defensive, and Amanda was silently impressed. The two most obvious reactions were from Kayla and Tara. Kayla made no attempt to disguise her distaste for him while Tara couldn’t be more obvious with her interest if she flat out told him she wanted to date him. Poor Tara. But he always found a way to bring the spotlight back onto him, whether it was with a comment or just a loud laugh. It was subtle but I could see everyone kind of revolving around him, whether they liked it or not. He’s an interesting guy, I’ll give him that. I wondered what it would be like to hang out with him alone. Eventually, once all the pizza had been devoured (Kayla out-ate all of us, much to Carson’s surprise), Craig glanced at the clock and said, “Hey, guys, not trying to be rude but we kinda gotta clean up.” “Why?” Carson said, once again splayed out on the sofa. “For mom and dad.” Carson grunted. “Yeah, I guess. Can’t they help?” Everyone looked suddenly uncomfortable. “Yeah, sorry,” Joe said, glancing at his wrist where there was no watch, “I got thing at place at now.” “Uh huh,” Carson said, his eyelids sliding down to halfway as he picked up the television remote, “See ya.” Everyone muttered a farewell, not exactly sure how to disengage themselves gracefully from someone they were still trying to figure out their feelings for. Well, almost all of us. Tara stuck out her hand. “Great to meet you, Carson,” she said perkily, “I hope I’ll see you again soon.” He shook her hand and gave her a nod. “Nice to meet you too,” he replied coolly. I shook his hand as well. “See you around?” I said. “You better,” he said, squeezing ...
