“You look great,” I replied, not glancing at her. “You didn’t even look at me!” “I don’t have to. I just know.” This time I did glance at her and I saw her blush. “Cheesy lines are only going to get you so far,” she muttered, trying to sound tough. “Working good for me so far,” I said, giving her a crooked grin. “Oh my God ,” Alan said, thumping back against the car seat, “Will you two give it a rest? You’re killing me!” “Oh, just make out with Amanda or something,” Kayla retorted. “Maybe I will,” he said, folding his arms. “Then do it,” she said, turning around in her seat to stare at him. He grabbed at Amanda but she slid out of his grasp. “If you’re only doing it because she challenged you to, you get nothing,” Amanda said primly, then giggled with Kayla as Alan gave the saddest whimpering noises I’ve ever heard a man give. I made a mental note to give him shit about it later. We scattered as soon as we got to the house, Alan and Amanda going to their rooms to do whatever, and Kayla and I headed to my room to find something to kill the slowly-moving time until Tara arrived. We chatted for a bit and poked around online for a bit but nothing caught our interest. Once we had exhausted our internet excursions, it was still only ten minutes until five. But…different?” She was scratching her head. “Trust me, it’ll make sense at the end.” “I hope so,” she said, “I mean, this is all fascinating stuff but…it’s really confusing.” “Oh, that’s nothing,” I replied, “You ever heard of David Lynch?” “Who?” “ Twin Peaks ? Blue Velvet ? Mulholland Drive ?” A shake of the head for each one. “ Dune ?” “Nope.” “Really?” I said, putting down the controller, “You’ve never heard of Dune ?” She shrugged. “Must be really out there.” “Well, ‘out there’ is the perfect way to describe Lynch. I’ll show you some of his movies.” “Looking forward to it,” she said with a smile. “Do you mean that, or is that just code for, ‘Shut up and play the game, Jack’?” “Don’t mess with me,” she said hotly, “I’ll give you a noogie so bad—” She stopped. I heard it too. The crunch of tires on gravel. I glanced at the clock. 5:49. It had to be them! I dropped the controller on the ground and dashed out of the room, Kayla hot on my heels. I pounded down the ...
