roaring merrily and everyone gladly gathered around it, since the evening air was brisk enough to have us all shivering, even in sweaters. Dad and I fetched a few more chairs out of the basement and we made a tight circle around the fire pit, hands outstretched and greeting the warmth. “Give it another month or so,” Mr. Hannigan said, shivering as the warmth pushed the chill out of his body, “and we’ll be doing this with hot chocolate.” “If we’re doing hot chocolate, we’re doing it inside,” mom replied, “That’s why we have the fireplace.” “And lose the fresh air? Bah!” “Hey, nothing says fresh air like frostbite and hypothermia,” Alan grinned, nudging Amanda. She just shook her head with a small smile. “Oh, you want cold?” Mrs. Hannigan said, “Remember that weekend trip to Minnesota, honey?” “Oh, dear Lord,” Mr. Hannigan said, pinching the bridge of his nose. Kayla frowned. “What trip?” “This was when you were only a couple years old. Anyway, it was just when I was starting as an intern for…um…do you remember who I was with at that point?” Mr. Hannigan shrugged. “Anyway, there we are, middle of December, and we’re used to Southern winters so we have maybe a light jacket or two.” “Oh, jeez,” dad said. “Yeah, that wasn’t smart. I groaned a little and put a hand to my stomach. “You okay, Jack?” dad asked. “Yeah, food’s just settling,” I replied. “So I take it you won’t be moving up north for a retirement getaway?” mom asked. “North? Ha!” Mr. Hannigan laughed, “It’s the Bahamas for us. Just got to get this one,” he jerked his thumb at Kayla, “Through college.” Kayla swatted at her dad. “Sorry I’m making you wait so long,” she said tartly. “Got any ideas about college?” mom asked Kayla. She shook her head. “Still way too early.” “It’s never too early,” Mrs. Hannigan replied, “I knew what college I wanted to go to at your age.” “Yeah, because grandma and grandpa wouldn’t let you go anywhere else,” Kayla said, rolling her eyes. I groaned and rubbed my stomach again. “Jack, do you need a Gas-X or something?” mom asked. “No, really, I’m fine. Just need a minute.” “Okay, but if you need to go sit on the toilet…” “Mom!” Kayla was giving me an odd look. I winked at her again. “It’s never too early to start thinking about colleges,” dad said. He turned to Alan and Amanda. “Same goes for you two.” “Why bother with college?” Alan asked, “I’m gonna win the lottery anyway.” “Well, until you win the ...
