our food By his bounty We are fed Thank you for our daily bread Amen . The Hannigans droned in a monotone, not knowing the words to the prayer but picking up on the rhythm of it all the same. The prayer finished, we all dug in. I tried the peady pwas first thing, dipping my fork into the rice and pulling up a generous portion with plenty of the peas-and-bacon topping. I saw Kayla watching me and I smiled at her before putting my fork in my mouth. Mother of God…it was fantastic ! I had no idea how the peas and bacon would taste together but it was simultaneously spicy and refreshing, a weird combination of the wholesome blandness of the peas and the thickness of the bacon that balanced out well with the onions as a bridge. I think I even tasted some garlic in there. “Wow,” I said, shoveling another bite into my mouth. Kayla laughed. “I think he likes it, mom.” “Good,” Mrs. Hannigan said with a smile, “You like it, Jack?” “Uh huh,” I managed to grunt, still stuffing my face. Mom was taking several bites as well, a critical look on her face as she tried to figure out the ingredients. “I get everything but the spice,” she said, swallowing, “What do you use?” “Tony Sacheros,” Mrs. Hannigan replied, “Not too much but enough to give it flavor.” “Flavor isn’t going to be a problem,” dad said, also enjoying his peady pwas (God, it was just fun to say now), “Amazing, Mary. Thankfully, no one felt awkward in the silence and were more than happy to add the sound of their chomping and appreciative groans to the din. Finally, there was a lull in the eating as everyone caught their breaths and the conversation picked up. “So, Jack,” Mr. Hannigan said, suppressing a belch, “How has work been going?” “Really well,” I replied, “Did Kayla tell you about the District Manager visit a few weeks ago?” “No,” Mr. Hannigan said, flicking a glare at Kayla before returning his gaze to me, “What did they have to say?” “Well, they might send me to gaming conventions and stuff to represent Gamestop and find out the latest trends and stuff like that.” “Do you want to stay with video gaming?” Mrs. Hannigan asked. “I don’t know,” I replied, “You mean, like, do I want to make video games?” “Sure.” “Not really. I prefer playing them to finding out how they’re made.” Dad laughed. “I tried explaining to him how a television works when he was younger and he decided he preferred to think that it ran on magic.” “Easier than what you were saying,” I muttered. “So what do you want to do, Jack?” Mr. Hannigan asked. “Play video games and get paid for it,” Alan interjected, “The American Dream.” I flicked a green bean at him. “Yeah, and what are you gonna do, Alan?” “Win the lottery and do absolutely nothing,” he said ...
