“Hey I’m home. Hattie? Are you there?” Dave closed the front door and sniffed the air. Something was different. The house smelled of furniture polish and it was eerily quiet; no deafening Xbox game playing coming from the living room, no thumping music blaring from the bedrooms above. “Hattie, kids?” he called. “It’s just me,” said a voice from the kitchen. Dave walked in to find his wife standing at the sink with the hoover in one hand and an opened bottle of wine in the other. She took a swig as he approached. “Everything alright?” he asked. “Just cleaning up,” she shrugged. “Drink?” “Do I get mine in a glass?” “Sorry, course you do. I’m a little nervous,” she tittered. “Oh? Why? Are we expecting visitors?” It certainly looked like they were. The kitchen had been scrubbed from top to bottom and positively gleamed, in fact, the whole house shone like a new pin. Dave eyed his wife suspiciously. Something was going on. He suddenly noticed what she was wearing; a new dress with matching shoes, expensive ones by the looks of them. The dress was midnight blue with a low-cut front and fitted waist which showed-off Hattie’s petite figure perfectly. The shoes were elegant with stiletto heels that enhanced the shapely slenderness of her legs. She looked fabulous, very sexy but it wasn’t exactly the attire he’d expected her to be wearing to do the housework! “Are you sure you’re ok?” he asked as she filled a glass with wine and handed it to him. “Fine, yes fine,” Hattie stammered. ...
Her lips quivered as she spoke making the glossy lipstick she was wearing shimmer. Lipstick? Hattie never wore make-up. Dave frowned. “What’s the occasion? And where are the kids?” “They’re at your mother’s. We have a Friday night without them for once.” “Do we?” A smile spread across Dave’s face. He liked the sound of that. He and Hattie rarely got time alone. “So that outfit’s for my benefit? You do look lovely.” Hattie lowered her eyes, guilt-ridden. “Yes… well… sort of.” “Hattie? What’s going on?” Hattie bit her lip. “I’ve done something a bit rash, darling.” “Oh? What?” “Please don’t be angry with me,” she squirmed. “Why would I be angry?” asked Dave taking a mouthful of his drink. “Because I’ve booked a call-girl.” Dave choked spraying wine across the kitchen. “You’ve what ?” Hattie drew a deep breath, “I’ve booked a call-girl. For us.” “That’s what I thought you said!” Dave gasped. “Why? When?” “She’s coming tonight, soon actually. Oh my goodness, look at the time! Do I look alright? Is the house ok? I’ve been cleaning up for hours and…” “Yes, I know, I’ll clean up the wine… Hattie, slow down. Tonight ?” Hattie nodded. “I don’t understand. Why?” “It was that conversation we had, you know, last month at the restaurant. I… well… I couldn’t get it out of my mind.” “Conversation?” Dave shook his head, “what conversation?” “The one we had following our disagreement .” “Oh,” said Dave, “ that conversation.” Hattie was referring was a rather heated discussion which had taken ...
