I said with a grin. Maddie simply smiled. We finished cleaning up and she went into the house while I covered the grill. She came back out a few minutes later, having covered her bikini with a pair of cutoff denim shorts and a loose t-shirt that hung off one shoulder. She had a disgusted look on her face. “Ugh, I can’t believe this,” she said in an exasperated tone. “Mark’s passed out. Again.” I shook my head. “One of these days we’re going to have to have a talk with him about this shit. I mean, he doesn’t drink that often, but when he does...” “He gets hammered and passes out and leaves his girlfriend pissed off and without a ride home,” Maddie finished. “Pissed off maybe,” I said, “but not without a ride home. Come on, help me finish up and I’ll take you home.” Maddie smiled at me and helped me close down the umbrellas over the patio tables. “Thanks, Dave. You’re really sweet. I’m so glad you like me.” “What’s not to like?” I asked. “Well, after how things worked out, with me ending up with your brother and all, in this type of situation most guys wouldn’t be as cool about it as you are. I’m really glad you’re ok with me.” “Maddie,” I said, stopping what I was doing and looking into her eyes, “you know I wish things had turned out differently. But I’m not mad at you for how things turned out. It’s not your fault.” She said “Thank you for that,” and reached out and squeezed my hand. A bolt of electricity shot up my arm when she touched me. I glanced over at her and saw a look on her face that prompted me to ask her if anything was wrong. “Yes, something’s wrong,” was her answer. “Feel like talking about it?” I asked. “I don’t know,” she said. “I mean, I want to, but after what happened between us last weekend, I don’t know if...” “Maddie,” I said, reaching over and taking her hand. “Whatever happened between us, you can talk to me. It’ll stay just between us, if that’s what you’re worried about. Hell, if anything, what we did last weekend ought to prove more than anything that stuff can stay just between us.” “True,” she said with a rueful smile. She chewed her bottom lip for a moment, then sighed and said, “I’m really, really upset with Mark.” “You should be,” I said. “He got blasted and passed out on you. How many times does this make?” “It’s not just that,” she said. “If it was just that, it would probably be ok. But for him to do it today...” “Why, what’s today?” She turned to face me. “Tonight was going to be the night,” she said. “I decided I was ready to take things to the next level, and I wanted to do it tonight. I was going to wait until everyone was gone, take him upstairs, light some candles, and finally have sex with my boyfriend. But instead, he decided that getting drunk was more fun than having sex with his girlfriend.” ...
