'But I'll get back to you on that,' I finished. Then I looked up from my laptop. 'And so the story ends,' I smiled. The two women were silent for a moment. They hadn't uttered a sound while I read them my first Lush-story, 'The Second Wives Club'. Then my words were greeted by hoots and cat-calls. 'Wow, Emma, you dog!' Harriet laughed. She wasn't my stepmom, of course, though I had given her that role in my story. For that's what it was. Just a story. A hoax. A dare. Last week we had played a game of truth or dare, and my two neighbours had dared me to write a porn story for Lush. Now they were back, both of them. And my story made quite an impression. 'God, you've got a dirty mind!' Laura, a large and lively brunette, shook her head and wagged a finger at me. No, she wasn't a stepmom either, but my neighbour of five years. She was thirty-nine and, as the cliché goes, trapped in a loveless marriage. Victoria, her stepdaughter from my story, didn't exist. 'So, Emma, that's what you dream about when you're alone in your bed?' Harriet, my friend from three doors down, a tall and lanky blonde of thirty-eight, was single and worked as a teacher. I grinned at her. It was a Sunday afternoon and we were soaking up the sun on the terrace of my small villa on the isle of Jersey. Of course I am no college girl, as I portrayed myself in my first story, but a woman of thirty-seven, divorced, and working as an office manager for a letterbox company. I sipped my wine, satisfied with their ...
reactions to my story. But we were playing a game, weren't we? So I turned to Laura. 'Right. Now it's my turn,' I told her. 'Truth or dare?' Laura hesitated, but she had to make a choice. 'Truth?' she offered. 'Alright,' I conceded. 'Answer this question truthfully. Were you turned on by my story?' Laura didn't need to think twice. 'Yes,' she answered. 'I'm wet.' Then she blushed violently, realizing what she'd just blurted out. 'I didn't ask you to elaborate,' I said, 'but that gives me the right to a second question. Are you a lesbian?' Time slowed down, or so it seemed. It was the way she held her head, the way she looked at me, as if she'd made a decision that could change her life forever. A hint of desperation. 'I think so.' Laura's voice sounded hoarse. 'Yes, I probably am.' I had suspected as much, but still it came as a surprise. A surprise? No, a bombshell. But even more shocking perhaps was Harriet's spontaneous, involuntary reaction. 'Oh, darling,' she breathed. Reality beats fiction, that's how it goes. In those few seconds our whole world turned upside down. Because neither Laura nor Harriet doubted for one moment that my writing this provocative story was my own statement, my own secret coming-out, as contradictory as that may sound. 'I love you both,' I whispered, trying to get a grip, because I had never expected this to happen. Time, place and circumstance had triggered three confessions. It all happened on an ordinary Sunday, three women just talking and ...
