Chapter 41 The next day was a blur of activity. After breakfast the entire community gathered to help with the boat project. We divided into two groups: one, headed by Patricia, concentrated on collecting palm leaves and weaving them into matting to later sew into sails. The other, captained by Horace, chopped trees and bamboo in order to create a framework to lash on top of the raft. This would allow a rigid structure onto which we would attach mast and sails, rigging, rudder, and daggerboards. Patricia had designed the thing on a piece of paper salvaged from the plane, and after showing it to Horace, he took on the carpentry tasks. The two seemed to have reached an uneasy truce; they were obviously attracted to one another, but the man’s pride and his little problem were an insurmountable obstacle between them, it seemed. I pitched in on the building portion, while Janie and Joelle added their efforts to the sailmaking. We all put in a full morning’s work, feeling energized by the group purpose. By lunchtime we had made significant progress, and we had every hope we might be finished the next day. We broke for a meal and some rehydration, and I ate with Janie and Joelle. Janie gave me a little hell while we lunched, telling Joelle about my nude modeling the previous evening for hand-job instruction.
