her? What happened to ‘you only get to come after me’? Was I jealous? I scoffed at the thought whilst knowing it was true. How I wanted to be her! And he’d been here, right here with handcuffs and lube and his hand in my snatch and I’d been too much of a coward to say yes. It made me want to scream. But, of course, Cooper wouldn’t have liked that. Eventually, I heard her leave and there was a lull. Through the forty minutes of carnal activity, I hadn’t heard Cooper come. If he’d come I would have heard it. I knew that uncontrollable sound he made. I knew it twenty times over. What was he waiting for? What more did he want? Why hadn’t he let out that half-concealed lamenting groan? Ten minutes later I found out. There was a tap on his door. Another girl. Oh. Ugh. No. Two girls in one night? No way. I told myself I would not listen but even with my good intentions, it was impossible. Eavesdropping is one thing but being unable to block out noise is another. I tried to read a book. John Grisham. John Steinbeck. Jeffrey Archer. The words blurred on the pages. All I could hear was loud, loud, incessant moaning. Wailing. Screaming. The whole goddamn apartment block must have been listening. Thumping. Fucking. Moaning. Grunting. I’d already soaked through my clean underwear. I watched the screen through glassy eyes until finally I heard the door shut resoundingly as Cooper’s slut left his apartment. Relief filtered through me. I turned off the television and headed into my bedroom. It was almost midnight by now but I was still wide awake. Outside the window, the world was alive, lights on, cars speeding, people dropping in and out of clubs. Out there were real people, living real lives while I was trapped in this messed-up fantasy paradox. But it was over, at least for now. The silence was beautiful. I could finally hear my own thoughts. And then I heard Cooper’s door open and shut again. I froze. Maybe he was going out. No. Another girl’s voice, bringing the running total up to three. Three! THREE?! In one goddamn night? I tried to fight the urgent rage coursing through me. He was unbelievable. Un-belie-vable. I stood in the doorway from my bedroom to the living area and I didn’t even need to be close to the wall to hear. “ We have to be quick. It’s late .” “ You don’t make the rules .” FUCK YOU, COOPER! You and your stupid goddamn rules and stupid goddamn sluts. Nobody gives a shit! I slammed my bedroom door shut but to no avail. The dirty talk and murmurs rumbled through ...
