Jenny wondered if they could be heard. They kissed, hard, while he pushed himself deep inside her a final time. “Fuck Jenny, I love you,” Liam said. After, there was a cold sweat on Liam’s brow that Jenny kissed. She reached over to turn the light off and climb under the duvet. But in the second after the darkness fell Jenny glanced over to her neighbour’s window again, and saw something that would keep her awake for another hour in restless excitement: it was a silhouetted shadow. And it definitely moved. * Lying awake in bed the next morning, Jenny felt a twinge of guilt right where she’d felt so excited last night. Somehow what she’d done had been unfaithful to Liam. Sheepishly, she looked over to him, just stirring next to her. He weakly opened an eye and said, “Last night was the best. You’re fantastic.” That settled her. There was no denying it had thrilled her more than anything they’d done. Just thinking back to what had happened and realising that a stranger - a man she had only met that morning - had seen her naked doing something so intimate with the man she was about to marry. So she went earlier for her coffee that day and was relieved there was no sign of him at the coffee shop. It was empty: the only other person in the queue was a girl about Jenny’s age. From behind, Jenny admired her blonde pixie crop and slender figure. She turned around as Jenny came in and Jenny’s first thought was: nice, friendly eyes. But the girl looked flushed and embarrassed. It turned out the girl was short of change and was rooting in her bag for more money. Jenny, conscious that Tony could appear at any time, was keen to both impress the girl and speed things up and offered the 50p difference to stop her having to break into a twenty pound note. The girl looked up and thanked Jenny, still sounding embarrassed. But they fell into conversation easily and ended up sipping their coffees outside. Jenny forgot about running into Tony because the girl was so vivacious. The sort who’d make a good friend. All Jenny managed to find out about her was her name (Ruby), that she was from down south and was also new to the area. Like the nicest people, Ruby made Jenny feel like the important one. In the space of ten minutes, Jenny had unburdened about the problems with her new flat and told her all about her upcoming marriage. Ruby asked if Jenny had tried on the dress – and Jenny said she had a final fitting the next day. Ruby said she’d love ...
