flutter. I’d done the flirting, the bending over, the sucking on the end of a pen, the watching his mouth, the casual touching of his leg and now I was being quiet. He would ring and I would fight the natural inclination to answer. Soon enough, the urge went. Three weeks in and Cooper and I were lying half on his bed, half on his floor and my phone lit up with Sam’s name. The ignoring was over. We’d been on two dates since the grand plan had been set into action and I’d brushed off his end-of-date advances both times. I breathed out a groan. “I feel like I’m already cheating on him.” I expected Cooper to laugh but he sighed. “I get that. But hey, if he turns out to be everything you want, one day you’ll tell him how you set it all up.” “And?” “And he’ll either get annoyed which proves he wasn’t worth it or he’ll revenge-fuck you.” I eased myself up and rejected the call. “So.” Cooper said,“You’re coming to church tomorrow, right?” “Right,” I hesitated and he looked at me suspiciously. “ What ?” The thing was, my friend Lacey’s wedding was coming up. She and I had been friends since we were kids and the wedding was to be a mid-sized affair. Since her family and mine were close, my parents would show up and inevitably hassle me if I was there without a date. Cooper seemed to be the most appropriate man for the job. He knew how to act like Mr Perfect. The only problem was convincing him to go. I knew without having even asked him that he wouldn’t be open to the idea. But hey, ...

I need you to go with me.” “What!?” “My friend Lacey’s getting married,” I continued. “Lacey?” “Lacey Edson. She’s been over a couple of times. I don’t think you’ve met her.” There was a pause and then he said, “No. I don’t think so. Let me get this straight. You want me to be your date?” I looked at him. “Please?” He snorted. “No. I don’t do weddings.” “Well, I never did church until you asked me to.” I exhaled. “Please.” “No! Why don’t you take that fool from work?” “Because I’m drip-feeding him, remember?” Cooper groaned and threw an arm over his eyes. “Jesus! You’re so complicated. Why can’t you go alone?” “’Cause I’m a bridesmaid. And it’s embarrassing.” “I’m not going.” “Then I’m not going to church tomorrow.” There was a pause and then the most beautiful words I’d ever heard came out of Mr Hyde’s mouth. “Fine. You win.” *** “Third date. Tonight is the night.” One week later, Cooper watched me dash around mybedroom as I grabbed my purse, checked my hair and searched for an appropriate jacket. “He’s either gonna prove himself or blow it. Good luck, neighbour.” I slid on my shoes and glanced at him. “What’re you gonna do tonight?” “Find some girl. I won’t wait up. If you’re back early, I don’t even want to know.” I flashed him a half-anxious grin. “I seriously do not know how ...
