"You can go right in, A.D. Moore is waiting for you." The secretary smiled briefly and went back to her typing. I suddenly wished I'd used the bathroom before coming up to the eighth floor. It wasn't every day that an agent trainee had a personal meeting with an Assistant Director of the FBI. I opened the door slowly, peering into the spacious office, and then deciding that was a bit too meek, I stepped inside properly. "Close the door, Wells, and have a seat." The man was older, in his sixties, and wore horn rimmed glasses. He was behind his big desk, reading a file of some sort. "Thank you, sir." I did as he'd indicating, settling into a large leather chair and crossing my legs a little self-consciously. "You've been with the Bureau for almost 3 months, I see. Graduated Summa Cum Laude out of Stanford with a degree in..." "English Literature." I nodded. "Elizabethan Poetry." I don't know why I added that. "Elizabethan." He nodded too and looked at me. "How useful is that degree?" "Useful sir?" I frowned slightly. "I'm not sure I understand." He smiled and I'd heard he was an asshole, now I believed it. "No Wells, this is about an assignment. A special assignment that you're being considered for." "Oh." I didn't know how to react to that, but my surprise was natural. "You're 22 years old." He stated and I nodded. "Single." I nodded again. "No...boyfriends? Fiance' anything like that?" "Um, no. Not right now." I sort of looked over his head, staring at the wall, wondering if he was going to ask... "How about a girlfriend?" He stared at me. I'd taken the polygraph, everyone did, and among the questions were several about sexual orientation, experiences and the like. I'd told the truth and so, the truth was in my file. "Not, uh..." I licked my lips. "Not at the moment. Nothing serious." The girl I was seeing, a lawyer with the State Department...She could be serious, if she wanted to be. I felt my heart beating faster. "But, you are a lesbian, right?" He was being blunt to the point of rudeness, in my opinion. "Yes." I answered quietly. I'd been assured it ...
